I am Dr. Hawar Khalil Taher (Nerwiy), Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in International Relations at the University of Duhok.  My passion lies in exploring the ever-changing political landscape of the Middle East, with a particular focus on the Kurdish question, state-society dynamics, and contemporary security issues.

For over two decades, the Netherlands has been my academic home. During this time, I have pursued degrees at prestigious universities throughout the country, culminating in a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Studies from Leiden University (2012). My doctoral thesis delved into three key areas:

• Nation and Nationalism

• The Kurdish National Question

• International Relations and the Iranian Crisis during the Cold War

Engaging with the Middle East

My academic journey began with a fascination with the Middle East, leading me to pursue studies in Utrecht University, Leiden University, and ultimately returning to contribute to the intellectual landscape of Iraqi Kurdistan at the University of Duhok.
