Pre-College Opportunities

Enrichment

Universities offer summer enrichment programs where students can experience college first-hand. This is an opportunity to be curious and creative, visit campuses, learn from professors, and meet new people. Day classes, overnight stays in dorms, and virtual workshops are participation options. These opportunities do not guarantee admission to a particular college and each varies in deadlines, eligibility, and cost. This list is not exhaustive; search for subjects you’re most interested in and see what’s available!

Where There Be Dragons

Research

In collaboration with the Harvard Undergraduate OpenBio Laboratory, we are thrilled to announce our inaugural Student Research Institute (SRI), a virtual research program where students are paired with principal investigators and researchers who are leading professionals in their respective fields, and we have identified your school amongst those that may have a large number of interested students! The SRI, which Harvard will be hosting, is a free program for students to virtually research with Harvard and other Ivy League faculty, publish their work in a Harvard research journal, and potentially earn an all expenses paid trip to Harvard for workshops with prestigious faculty. Our goal is to make the life sciences accessible to all who are interested, and this will be the first time that Harvard is opening up its resources to directly serve high school students for free! For more information on our organization and SRI, please visit our website and our SRI handbook. Applications are now open, and we would greatly appreciate it if you could forward this information to your students interested in the life sciences or to any science teachers you may know with students interested in the life sciences.

Events

Service with a Name (SWAN) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and student organization at Harvard College dedicated to catalyzing involvement, careers, and therefore lives, in public service for youth around the country, through mentorship, social engagement, and dynamic, outgoing community building. They are hosting an engaging and dynamic conference for high schoolers on Harvard University’s campus from April 13th-14th, 2024, entitled the Future Leaders in Public Service Conference (FLIPS). FLIPS is a 2-day conference on Harvard’s campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts for high schoolers who aspire to be our nation’s future leaders in fields of public service, which encompass government, education, justice reform, and the nonprofit sector. High school students are placed in small groups, each led by a current Harvard College student, providing a unique opportunity for mentorship and leadership development. Attendees hone personal goals, experience a glimpse of college life at a top university, hear from public service professionals, and are taught public service leadership skills to bring back to their communities and to utilize in their current and future roles as leaders focused on the public good. FLIPS represents a unique opportunity for students to distinguish themselves and to highlight their true commitment to becoming future leaders in public service. They are inviting students from across the country to apply for the opportunity to attend FLIPS -- apply here. Applications are due February 11th, 2024. They want to be as inclusive as possible, and will be providing financial support to students who cannot afford to attend!
