Universities offer summer enrichment programs where students can experience college first-hand. This is an opportunity to be curious and creative, visit campuses, learn from professors, and meet new people. Day classes, overnight stays in dorms, and virtual workshops are participation options. These opportunities do not guarantee admission to a particular college and each varies in deadlines, eligibility, and cost. This list is not exhaustive; search for subjects you’re most interested in and see what’s available! Entries that are starred have been attended and recommended by ULS students.

In collaboration with the Harvard Undergraduate OpenBio Laboratory, we are thrilled to announce our inaugural Student Research Institute (SRI), a virtual research program where students are paired with principal investigators and researchers who are leading professionals in their respective fields, and we have identified your school amongst those that may have a large number of interested students! The SRI, which Harvard will be hosting, is a free program for students to virtually research with Harvard and other Ivy League faculty, publish their work in a Harvard research journal, and potentially earn an all expenses paid trip to Harvard for workshops with prestigious faculty. Our goal is to make the life sciences accessible to all who are interested, and this will be the first time that Harvard is opening up its resources to directly serve high school students for free! For more information on our organization and SRI, please visit our website and our SRI handbook. Applications are now open, and we would greatly appreciate it if you could forward this information to your students interested in the life sciences or to any science teachers you may know with students interested in the life sciences.
10th and 11th graders:
Interested in environmental science or journalism/media?
I've been invited to nominate students to attend the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment (WYSE) or the Washington Journalism and Media Conference (WJMC), sponsored by, and held on the campus of George Mason University, located in the Washington, D.C. area this summer.
The WYSE curriculum includes:
Panel discussions with environmental experts. Past speakers include the Administrator to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy, and the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey, as well as leaders of the nation’s most prominent environmental and conservation organizations.
Exclusive site visits to the locations in and around the Washington, D.C. area.
Hands-on simulation using real-world environmental topics
At WJMC, students:
Explore real-world experiences with media professionals at the National Press Club and the U.S. Capitol.
Learn about the fields of journalism and media from dynamic speakers. Past speakers include Hoda Kotb of the “TODAY Show” on NBC; Chuck Todd, moderator of Meet the Press for NBC; Carol Guzy, Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist for The Washington Post; and Candy Crowley, former host of CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Develop decision-making skills working in exciting First Amendment and newsroom simulations.
More information can be found at wyse.gmu.edu and wjmc.gmu.edu. Students represent their high school and state during this exciting conference and receive college credit for participating.
