The Outreach Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture organized a training on “Open House: Experience of Agricultural Higher Education, UoJ” with the sponsorship of JICA PRECIDA – UOJ, on Wednesday 24th October, 2025, at the main auditorium of the Faculty of Agriculture and JICA Research and Training Centre, Ariviyal Nagar, Kilinochchi from 8.30 am - 4.05 pm. The prime aim of this open house training is to
• Motivating students to choose higher education in agricultural
• Show case the advanced research facilities available at the faculty of Agriculture particularly resources available in the high tec laboratory of the JICA Research and Training Complex of the FOA, UOJ. Around 233 students and 19 teachers from the from the Kilinochchi, and Mullaitivu district were participated and benefitted.
The workshop started with the brief address on the objective and anticipated outcome of Open House: Experience of Agricultural Higher Education, UoJ delivered by the outreach committee chair and Dean of of the faculty of Agriculture Prof. K. Pakeerathan at 8.30 am. Then Ms. Takayama Misao delivered a brief talk on “Importance of Agriculture: Agriculture in SL and Japan; About JICA (Agricultural sector policy and project) (introduction by photos) and Research work of the students @ JICA building. Then the participants were divided in six groups containing an average of 25-30 members. Each group were trained at six laboratories distributed among the five departments such as Department of Agronomy, Agricultural Biology, Animal Science, Soil Science Laboratory and Food Science Laboratories of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry and Agricultural Engineering as mentioned in the below schedule.
A one-day workshop on “Organic Fertilizer Production: Composting and Vermicomposting” was successfully conducted on August 23, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the Auditorium, Home Garden and Farm Unit, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna, Ariviyal Nagar, Kilinochchi. The workshop was conducted in Tamil and jointly organized by the Jaffna Science Association: Section B (2025) (JSA-B) and the Outreach Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture, with financial sponsorship from Kaveri Kalamantram (KKM).
A total of 66 individuals participated in the workshop, representing all five districts of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Among them, 55 were farmers and agri-entrepreneurs, including leprosy-affected beneficiaries.
The technical sessions and practical demonstrations were led by experienced academics and practitioners from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna. The program began with a welcome address by Dr. N. Thiruchelvam, JSA-Section B Chairperson. Prof. N. Gnanavelrajah, Senior Professor in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, delivered a comprehensive lecture on “Techniques for Quality Compost Production and Sri Lanka Standards”. This was followed by an experience-sharing session on market opportunities and challenges by Mr. Kanesnathan Thushanthan, Director of Dream Garden & Agro Services Pvt. Ltd. Prof. G. Mikunthan, Senior Professor in the Department of Agricultural Biology, presented on “Techniques in Vermicomposting”. After lunch, Dr. A. Shayanthan, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, delivered a talk on “Modern Composting Technologies and the Use of Biofertilizers”.

Harvesting Ceremony on 23.07.2025
First harvest ceremony was held on 23.07.2025 at beneficiary farmer Mr.M.Manoharan's field at thiruvaiyaru, Kilinochchi at 9.00 am. Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Outreach committee members, JICA_PRECIDA experts, Assistant director research, Department of Agriculture , beneficiary farmers, farming community members, students of faculty of Agriculture, community members participated and celebrated the event very successfully. The entire program was coordinated by Dr.S.J.Arasakesary, Project Incharge.
The Outreach Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture organized an workshop on SMART Agriculture with the sponsorship of JICA PRECIDA – UOJ, in collaboration with Sri Lanka and Commercial Bank PLC on June 27, 2025, at the main auditorium of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ariviyal Nagar; Farm units and Kilinochchi from 8.30 am – 4.15 pm. Around 100 Agriculture instructors of Northern Sri Lanka (50), commercial Bank beneficiary farmers (25) and youths from Kilinochchi, Mannar and Mullaitivu (25) were participated.
In this training automated Hi-Tech indoor farming, farm machineries, Drone technology were demonstrated at the Farm units of Faculty of Agriculture, outreach committee implementing SMART irritated farmer fields and commercial Bank, inthiagroup and faculty of Agriculture jointly implemented modernized paddy fields at Kilinochchi districts .......

A stakeholder meeting:
A stakeholder meeting was held on 11th of April in which the beneficiaries, agriculture instructors and the university project team and the proposed supplier also participated.
Trainings and Setting up the project fields:
A training class was conducted for the beneficiaries by the experts and the sponsor one of the sponsors was also present. Four farmers were selected based on the success of the previous project and a new farmer was come forward to participate in this project. Cocopeat, vermicompost, nursery trays, seeds, fungicide and the starter fertilizer were distribute to the individual beneficiaries and a demonstration was conducted on the establishment of seedlings using hybrid seeds. Field visit was also made to confirm the real situation of the fields and all necessary data were recorded for further progress. A second study is also in progress to generate grafted seedlings of brinjal hybrid using as Sion for the resistant rootstock for Bacterial wilt. Seedlings resistant entry was developed at project site.
A second field was made by the lead scientist and the sponsor to asses the seedling stages and field preparations. quotation work is in progress for the purchase of automation appliances and the distribution and the installation will be done soon.
A research assistant was recruited and intern will be appointed soon
As per the request of the Deputy Director, Department of Animal Production and Health, Kilinochchi District, and the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Department of Animal Science conducted a hands-on training session on dairy product development. The workshop aimed to enhance the skills of community-based organizations in developing dairy products, viz. Yoghurt and paneer, at the household and small-scale level. Approximately 20 participants from various community-based organizations attended and benefited from the training session. The participants gained valuable knowledge and hands-on experience in dairy product development techniques such as Yoghurt and Paneer. The training successfully equipped them with the essential skills to process and develop dairy-based products at the household level, thereby contributing to the sustainability of the local dairy industry.

The Outreach Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture and Department of Agricultural Biology jointly conducted a workshop on tissue culture on 05.03.2025 from 9.00am-12.00noon. The workshop which was targeted the stakeholders in agriculture development on Tissue Culture, designed to disseminate knowledge and expand awareness of tissue culture applications beyond the immediate participants. Achievements and Output of the Training:
Participants gained hands-on experience in stock solution preparation, media preparation, aseptic operations, explant selection and explant inoculation. Prof. Kohara provided valuable insights on laboratory management and a considerable development has been achieved at Tissue culture laboratory. Relevant aspects in tissue culture techniques were imparted to the trainees.. Steps were trigereed to continue the fruitful research for the development seedless Indian blackberry, Banana and curry leaves. Research students received expert feedback to refine their methodologies. Academic staff and students benefited from lectures and discussions on tissue culture practices.
The Outreach Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture organized an Academia-Public-Private Discussion Forum on “Problem Solving in Agriculture Sector: Agri-Tec-2025” with the sponsorship of JICA PRECIDA – UOJ, in collaboration with Sri Lanka Sri Lanka Agripreneurs’ Forum (SLAF), Agri Task Force [ATF], AAFA-UJ and Student's Union Faculty of Agriculture was on February 21, 2025, at the main auditorium of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ariviyal Nagar, Kilinochchi from 8.30 am – 6.00 pm. The prime aim of this discussion forum was to make connections between stakeholders from various public-private sectors and academia of FOA, identify the industries and farmers’ problems in the field of agriculture, provide the best solution for agro-entrepreneurs and agro-based industries, and facilitate students to conceive the research ideas to carryout researches. Around 280 members including the academia of FOA, JICA-PRECIDA experts, members from the Department of Agriculture, agro-entrepreneurs, farmers and final year undergraduate students of FOA were participated in the Agri-Tech-2024. More than seven agro-based industries and SMEs showcased their products and developed technologies to the participants.

The Outreach Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture in collaboration with Kavery Kala Manram organized a Stakeholder Discussion on " problem tree analysis to promote climate resilient crops and Livestock” with the sponsorship of Kavery Kala Manram, on Monday 20th of January, 2025, at the main auditorium of the Faculty of Agriculture from 8.30 am - 4.15 pm. The prime aims of this stakeholder discussion forum are
● To understand the climate impacts on crops and livestock
● To identify the key crops and livestock, need attention to promote from the climate change impact on food security of smallholder farmers
● Identify the strategies to strengthen the applicable best practices to promote small holder farmers

“Agri Modernization Village” Project's stakeholder meeting was held on 30th of August 2024 Friday at 10.00am in the IT unit of the faculty of Agriculture, Ariviyal Nagar. Higher level stakeholder authorities such as GA Kilinochchi, Senior Manager and his team commercial bank, Directors and Deputy Directors of agrarian service department, agriculture research, extension, irrigation, CSIAP members, agro technical input supplying partners, heads of departments, outreach committee members, JICA-PRECIDA project members and farmer organization members were participated.
Summary
The Outreach Committee (OC) of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Commercial Bank, Sri Lanka and other technology supplying local private partners are planning to jointly implement the “Agri Modernization Village” project in Malayazapuram Village KN09 [மலையாள புரம்], irrigated under Puthu-Iyan-Kulam [புது ஐயன் குளம்] by introducing advanced agricultural technologies and methods since mid-early October 2024 for three to five years, focusing on paddy cultivation. This initiative is designed with the objectives to enhance crop yields, reduce labor requirements, resource conservation, minimize environmental pollution and promote sustainable farming practices with the overall aim of enhancing economic status of the people of the project implementing a village consisting of 1500 families.
Key components of the project include:
1. Optimizing the yield of recommended High-Yielding Paddy Varieties
2. Machine based Paddy Transplanting Methods
3. Drone technology on fertilizer & pesticide application
4. Sensor based optimized fertilizer & pesticide application

In order to disseminate our success in micro irrigation intervention the 2nd field day was organized on 24th of July, 2024 at Farmer Field at Thiruvaiyaaru. It was a successful field day on micro irrigation for brinjal cultivation in the Killinochi District of Sri Lanka, drawing significant attention from local farmers, agricultural experts, and community leaders. The dignitaries Professor.S. Vasantharuba (Dean Faculty of Agriculture), Chief Secretary, Northern province Mr. I. Elangovan; Kilinochchi District secretary Mr.S.Muraleetharan, Director of agriculture Mrs.S.Senthilkumaran, Director Irrigation Eng.S.Ssuthakaran, Additional director research Mr.S.sivaneson and a well-wisher Eng.Sooryasegaran graced the occasion. Farmers, academics, students of the faculty of Agriculture, school students, Agriculture related companies and participants from various strata were participated. First harvest ceremony was held on 03.07.2024 at one of the demonstration plots on micro-irrigation system for brinjal cultivation at thiruvaiyaru, Kilinochchi at 9.00 am. Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Outreach committee members, JICA_PRECIDA experts, beneficiary farmers, farming community members, students of faculty of Agriculture, community members participated and celebrated the event very successfully. Twenty beneficiary commercial farmers of Offer Ceylon and UNDP project’s from Mullaitivu District were visited to farm unit of the faculty of agriculture on 27th of June 2024 at 9.00am-11.00am to learn hands-on experience and insights into innovative farming practices that could be implemented in their own farms to enhance productivity, sustainability, and efficiency. Outreach committee of the faculty of Agriculture organized the field demonstration of “walking and learning session”. During the visit farmers were taught on how does the state-of-the-art net house facilities are being used for research and demonstration and showcasing of various crops grown under controlled conditions. Further beneficiary farmers learned the modernized controlled irrigation and nutrient management techniques reduce water and fertilizer wastage; biogas production technology and how organic waste are being converted into renewable energy by effective disposal of organic waste, minimizing environmental pollution; Cost Savings: Reduction in electricity and fuel costs for the institution. At the exit point discussion on Implementation Challenges, Investment Costs to Initial setup and maintenance of modernized farm and need of the technical skills for the proper operation and maintenance were included.
The Outreach Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture and SLCDF / OISD / PALMERA Jointly organized a Workshop on "Successful Commercial Groundnut Cultivation" on May 29th, 2024, at the IT Unit of Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna from 9.00 am – 1.30 pm. The prime aim of this workshop was to provide agronomic aspects, pest and disease management, postharvest technology and seed certification for the commercial groundnut producers under the funding of OISD / PALMERA of SLCDF. Around 35 commercial groundnut seed producers and field officers of OISD / PALMERA of SLCDF were participated.

The Northern Provincial Council organized an exhibition on “Entrepreneurial School Garden” at Mallavi Central College, Mullaitivu with the coordination of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The exhibition aimed to promote the concept of school gardens with modernized agricultural practices, technology, awareness on food based dietary pattern and consumption of millets food, preparation of digital platform for school garden and other subjects based on agriculture promotion among school children as well as youth farmers. The event was held on 10th and 11th of October 2023 at the school premises and was open to the school students all over the Northern Province. Faculty of Agriculture also participated in the exhibition. Departments of Agronomy, Animal Science, Agricultural Biology, Agricultural Chemistry and Agricultural Engineering contributed to the exhibition by showcasing their exhibits and demonstrations to the audience with the financial assistance of University of Jaffna. They provided valuable insights into the benefits of home gardening and how it can be used to promote sustainable living. Minister of Education Dr.Susil Premajayantha graced the event as the chief guest. The event was well-attended by students, teachers, and members of various agriculture sectors.
The Outreach committee has arranged the transport service to carry the exhibits of all departments to the exhibition venue at Mallavi Central College on the day before exhibition (09.10.2023). Further, transportation arrangements were made by the outreach committee to ensure that the staff could easily access the venue.
