Divisional Secretariat, Kilinochchi District, outreach Committee members and Pluthi Aru Tank Farmer's organization members had a discussion on 11.11.2024 at the boardroom of the faculty of agriculture and final report on Puluthiyaaru lift irrigation Need Analysis project was presented.
As per the request of the Divisional Secretariat, Kilinochchi District, outreach Committee started the need analysis project. Outreach committee members and the students of the faculty of Agriculture are involved in this project. The aim of the need analysis is to re-commence the Pluthiare lift irrigation using using solar system to supply water for agriculture to the Mayavanoor village, Vaddakkachchchi, Kilinochchi.
A consultancy team headed by Prof. Nalina Gnanavelrajah from Soil Science division of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry received LKR 1, 834, 896.99.00 to undertake 500 soil testing consultancy work from SenzAgro solutions. The Soil testing project will be in three phases since April 2024.
A training was conducted to the field staff involved in soil sampling and other aspects related to the project by the consultancy team and SenzAgro team on May 10 th 2024.
As part of the consultancy, NEOPERK TECHNOLOGIES PRIVATE LIMITED engineers from Maharashtra, India visited the Faculty of Agriculture to train and evaluate the possibility of cutting-edge NEOPERK technologies [chemical free Near-Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy and Machine Learning (ML) spectoral soil mineral analyser] for soil testing from 26 th July to 1 st of August 2024. Such initiatives will pave way to reduce the soil testing cost for the farmers in future.
As per the request of the Commander/COL AQ BRANCH - SECURITY FORCES JAFFNA, outreach Committee members Prof.K.Pakeerathan, Dr.S.J.Arasakesary, Dr.N.Kannan, Dr.S.Sarujan and Mr.S.Sritharan served as resources for the technical counselling consultancy workshop at the Security Forces, Headquarters, Palay, Jaffna, Sri Lanka on 15th of July 2024 from 9.00am to 12.30pm. Technical advice and guidance on Crop planning, water management, pest management, emerging technology coupled cultivation methods, marketing and value addition of farm products were discussed.
As per the request of the Divisional Secretariat, Kilinochchi District, outreach Committee members went to a tactic visit to the "Plutiyaaru Lift Irrigation reservoir and Pump house" located at the Mayavanoor village to investigate the expectation and importance of the Need analysis. Entire plan of the project was explained by the Mr.Sri Bhaskaran, Director Planning; Mr Ketheeswaran Assistant Director of Planning, GS, Mayavanoor village, Mr.Murukathas (Village Level Coordinator to re-establishing the project with Netherland NGO), beneficiary farmers at the discussion held at the Mayanur community center on 29th of April 2024. At the meeting it was decided to carry out the detailed need analysis by the OC to submit the importance of the lift irrigation using solar system to the DS Kilinochchi.

‘Demonstration of Micro-Irrigation for Vegetable Cluster Farming’ has been initiated by the outreach committee to promote micro-irrigation technologies that increase water savings through a foreign sponsor who seeks the assistance of the Outreach Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna to take oversight role in implementing this pilot program in micro-irrigation. The project costs and risks beyond the first cost of technology will be reviewed together as a project team between all stakeholders including the participating farmers, OC, Lead Scientist, designated FMO, the Foreign Sponsor, and so forth. Members granted permission to proceed with the project.
