Science, sustainability, agriculture and collaboration come together in the new visual identity of the SALSA Project.
Three months after the start of the project, SALSA has reached another important milestone: our official visual identity is now complete!
More than simply giving the project a recognisable look, the new identity has been designed to tell the story behind SALSA: transforming tomato processing by-products into new resources for more sustainable agriculture and crop protection.
The visual identity was developed within WP5 – Knowledge Transfer, Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation and is presented in Deliverable D5.1 – Visual Identity and Communication Tools: Project Logo, Brochure and Poster. It provides a common visual language that will accompany SALSA throughout its activities, from scientific communication and field events to conferences, social media and engagement with farmers and other stakeholders.
At the centre of the new identity is the SALSA logo. At first glance it is simple and organic, but its different shapes bring together several dimensions of the project.
The tomato-inspired forms immediately connect the identity with the starting point of SALSA: tomato production and its by-products. The green leaf represents growth, sustainability and care for the environment, while the human figure recalls the people behind the project and the importance of collaboration between researchers, institutions and stakeholders.
The flowing shapes connecting these elements introduce another central idea: transformation. What is conventionally considered a leftover can become a resource, moving from research towards new sustainable solutions for agriculture.
This is also why the logo is built around organic, interconnected forms rather than separate symbols: people, agriculture, research, sustainability and circularity are all part of the same story.
The SALSA identity extends well beyond the logo.
A distinctive combination of red, green, black, white and neutral tones forms the project's core visual palette. Shapes extracted directly from the brandmark can then be enlarged, cropped and recombined to create backgrounds, image masks and graphic compositions.
The result is a flexible visual language that can change according to the content while remaining immediately recognisable as SALSA.
A dedicated family of icons has also been created to make SALSA's scientific topics easier to communicate.
Tomato residues, sustainable agriculture, biotechnology, crop protection, bio-based materials, circular economy, collaboration, research and data are translated into simple graphic symbols sharing the same rounded and organic geometry of the logo.
This will help us explain a complex research project not only to scientists, but also to farmers, advisors, agro-industry professionals, students, institutions and the wider public.
The new identity has already been translated into the first communication materials.
The official system includes a project brochure, presentation templates, scientific poster layouts and social-media assets, providing the SALSA consortium with a common toolkit for communicating the project consistently across both digital and printed channels.
From a conference presentation to a field activity, from a scientific poster to a social-media post, the same visual language will now accompany SALSA throughout the next stages of the project.
A visual identity for a common mission
SALSA brings together research, innovation and collaboration around a simple principle: what is left behind by one production process can become the starting point for something new.
Our new visual identity was designed around exactly the same idea — different elements coming together to create something recognisable, dynamic and shared.
