Scaling up agroecology for resilient Mediterranean farming systems
SALSA is a Research and Innovation Action funded by the PRIMA Foundation under the Section 2 Multi-topic Call – Edition 2025 and co-funded by the European Union. The project brings together Mediterranean researchers, farmers, companies and stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of agroecological practices at farm level.
Farming systems across the Mediterranean are increasingly affected by climate change, water scarcity, soil degradation, biodiversity loss and growing economic uncertainty. Although many agroecological solutions are already available, their practical adoption remains fragmented and often limited to individual farms or local initiatives.
The challenge is no longer only to develop sustainable practices, but to make them applicable, accessible and scalable.
Our Response: the SALSA approach
From promising practices to real farm-level change
SALSA supports the transition from isolated agroecological practices to integrated farming strategies adapted to different Mediterranean environments. The project combines scientific validation, demonstration activities, farmer involvement and socio-economic assessment to understand what works, under which conditions and how successful solutions can be replicated.
Shared Approach
Why the Mediterranean?
The Mediterranean is characterised by highly diverse crops, climates, production systems and socio-economic contexts. This diversity makes the region particularly vulnerable, but also creates a unique environment for collaboration and innovation. By connecting experiences from different countries, SALSA will identify solutions that are locally relevant and broadly transferable.
