What Safety Training do I need?
The Design Lab is an amazing place where you get to use some exciting tools. As we take a tour of the labs, let's also look at some safety rules and discuss why they are important to follow at all times.
Check out the presentation on Design Lab Safety and see if you can spot some of the dangerous behaviors.
Once you have gone over the safety rules, it's time to learn about some of the tools in the Design Lab by creating a small gift for our community.

As you explore the Design Lab and check out the projects we offer, you may get the idea that Design only teaches you how to use tools. However, our main goal is to equip you with a Design Thinking mindset. To do this, we follow the Design Cycle, which will help you to work through any future project you encounter!

What am I learning this year?
The answer to this question depends on you...
We try our best to allow students who have already
learned Design Skills and Tools in other schools to Level Up. If you don't have any experience with Design, no problem! We will take you through a few Core units to ensure that you are set up for success.
What if I already know the skills taught in the Core units?
Take this survey to inform your teacher about which skills you already know so we can better understand which Level of Design is the best fit: UNIS Design Pathways Survey. This is to ensure that you are operating within the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD): where the projects you engage in are challenging enough to keep your interest...but not too hard to discourage your progress.
Core units (outlined in red) are the units that will help you learn the basic Design skills necessary for you to move on to Level 2 and 3 projects. Choice units (outlined in green) challenge you to combine these skills to create more advanced products and solutions for a wider-range of audiences.
Level 1
In Level 1 Design you will encounter challenges that will build your skills and conceptual understanding using the MYP Design Cycle.
These projects will ease you into the Design Thinking mindset through designing products for a familiar target audience.

Level 2
In Level 2 Design you will learn more difficult skills and gain a deeper conceptual understanding of the iterative process of Design Thinking by broadening your target audience to the wider community.

Level 3
In Level 3 Design you will be expected to use the toolbox of skills you have acquired to develop real world solutions for a target market outside of your comfort zone.

What do we look for in a design student...
A student who produces high-quality, frequently innovative design solutions through the application of the design cycle. Communicates comprehensive, nuanced understanding of design concepts and contexts through independent and detailed work. Consistently demonstrates sophisticated critical and creative thinking to inform research methods and to refine selected solutions. Frequently transfers knowledge and applies skills, with independence and expertise, to complex real-world issues.

Evidence of Learning: There will be 4 checkpoints per unit that align with the MYP Design Criteria (A, B, C & D). A predicted final grade for each criteria is given based on the evidence of learning you have submitted at each checkpoint.

Summative Assessment (Final Grade): After receiving feedback and predicted grades in the above checkpoints, you will receive your final unit grade. All MYP Rubrics can be found by exploring each Design strands within the criteria.
What is the workflow in Design?
You will find most of the Course Resources on our Design Department Resource Website. Your Lesson Plans and Documentation will be hosted on our Learning Management System, Toddle. These lessons will direct you to the Design Resource Website where you will find the instructions needed to complete each of the tasks assigned.

You are about to engage in an Orientation Challenge!
During the Peat Pot Challenge, you will engage in multiple stations to learn how to use the Design Lab tools safely and explore how each tool serves a purpose in multiple aspects of a project.
When you arrive at each station, you will be required to complete a safety quiz before you begin using the tool. These quizzes include short videos and questions that show you how to use the tools safely. Here's how to log in to access the quizzes:
