“Our wisest long-term investment is not in the dirty polluting fossil fuels from the past, but in the clean energy of the future.” - London Breed
In 2024, it was found that coal accounts for 64.6% of the total electricity production in Vietnam, meaning that approximately 181.33 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (CO₂ equivalent) would have been emitted annually from coal alone. Moreover, industries in Vietnam are major energy consumers, and more than 70% were found to use traditional, unsustainable energy. Likewise, Viet Nam is currently the 18th largest emitter of greenhouse gas globally. This intensifies global warming, leading to more frequent and severe extreme weather events like heatwaves, floods, and hurricanes. Hence, our group has chosen to focus on SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy, particularly SDG 7.1.2, addressing the proportion of the population with primary reliance on clean fuels and technology. Even though traditional energy sources seem to be more reliable and faster, in the long term, this reliance negatively impacts the Human Development Index by worsening the health of people, the environment, and economic stability due to climate change and pollution, such as air pollution, which is a direct consequence of unsustainable energy. However, Vietnam’s weather changes drastically, which challenges the use of clean energy produced by natural resources such as wind and sun. Sustainable energy is also costly, with some prioritizing other projects over renewable energy. This is why our group has the mission of raising awareness and promoting clean energy through educational building kits and donating the profit to organizations. Small step at a time, our group aims to educate people about other energy initiatives in hopes of eventually implementing cleaner energy in Vietnam.
