“Sustainability is no longer about doing less harm. It’s about doing more good.” - Jochen Zeitz
The problem we are addressing in Phoenix Nest is the impact of recycling batteries. We are focusing on SDG 12.2, which is sustainable management of the use of natural resources. As people in Vietnam are facing economic barriers, they might not have enough money to purchase recycled batteries and sustainable materials. Batteries include different toxic chemicals inside and metal materials, which affect the world to be polluted and humans to be affected on their health. Recycling batteries provides significant environmental, economic, and social benefits by conserving natural resources, preventing pollution, and saving energy. The businesses in Vietnam are not practicing sustainable development, and they are very low. Only about 2% of businesses actively practice sustainable practices, and this is a significant gap in implementation. Using batteries has a significant negative impact on the environment, primarily due to the extraction of raw materials and improper disposal of used batteries. The usage of batteries has increased over time. Vietnam's battery market is experiencing significant growth, with the market size estimated at USD 326.32 million in 2024, projected to reach USD 454.11 million by 2029. This shows that many people in Vietnam are using more and more batteries, which affects the environmental issues Vietnam is facing. Companies such as Samsung, which is a huge company, are already establishing recycled batteries in their phones, for example, like the new S25. So if collaborating with Samsung, it can benefit our group to get access and help with this issue, improve economic growth in Vietnam, and the living conditions in the world. Another issue of batteries is the increase in carbon emissions, primarily due to battery production, which is energy-intensive, and how they are used in the power grid. Recycling batteries can help to reduce a study concluding that recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 58–81% and cuts water use by 72–88%. Which has a big impact on the world, between using recycled batteries and not using them. This is why the Second Life Project can help solve this to be solved. Our first step is to sell batteries to the battery recycling company and, with that money, create products using sustainable energy sources, such as solar panels and sell the products to the people in Vietnam.
