"We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it" - Barack Obama
The problem we are focusing on is the human development barrier of vulnerability against natural disasters (SDG 13.1, Climate Action). In the summer, heatwaves are a major geographical barrier in Vietnam, with temperatures going up to 38ºC. Countless people, especially the elderly, get sick or die because of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. On April 29 this year, 2 elderly people died due to heatstroke in Ha Tinh province at noon when temperatures rose over 50°C. While there are no official statistics on how many people die due to heat-related illness in Vietnam, globally, approximately 489,000 heat-related deaths have been reported (WHO). The implications of these natural disasters are major economic and developmental problems for Vietnam in the future if not addressed. Heatwaves can cause major fire hazards due to creating dry conditions, and severely hinder and impact power grids, as well as affect agriculture and crops. This is decreasing efficiency and affecting the local economy. Along with that, workers suffering from heatstroke will decrease or halt their productivity, as long hours can make them sick or worse. This can decrease the human development of Vietnam. It’s estimated that it will cost Vietnam around 28 billion USD, including coverage for healthcare, deaths, and work loss by 2050. Households unable to afford cooling systems will also be impacted, as the temperatures within their houses can get high, even worse in urban areas. Even if there are A/C utilizations, A/C requires high amounts of electricity, as well as making up 3% of gas emissions worldwide. In conclusion, heat stroke is a major issue in Vietnam, severely affecting the human development, economy, and society of the nation.
