“Pure water is the world's first and foremost medicine” - Slovakian Proverb
Our team has chosen to focus on Sustainable Development Goal 6. We ensure there is full access and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Our target we chose to aim for is 6.3, improving the quality of water by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and lessening the release of hazardous chemicals and materials, splitting the untreated wastewater proportion and greatly increasing safe reuse and recycling globally. The specific indicator we chose to look into is 6.3.2, the proportion of bodies of water with good, ambient water quality. In the human development barriers, this focuses on the Economic Barriers, where in Hanoi, Vietnam, some communities, facilities, schools and others don’t have full access to safe and good quality of water. This is an issue for communities in Vietnam, too, because industrial facilities don’t treat the wastewater properly, and a few healthcare facilities do not own wastewater treatment systems. Also, people improperly throw away rubbish or trash into lakes, rivers, and canals, which causes the water to be full of pollutants and may also contain harmful chemicals. The problem of water pollution is difficult to solve because the habit of some people throwing waste into the waters of lakes and rivers is practically becoming normalized instead of the designated waste disposal, such as recycling bins, for example. If this issue continues without proper or appropriate action, the safe quality of precious water may eventually be scarce in Vietnam. The data from ourworldindata.org has shown that in 2022, the share of domestic wastewater that is properly and safely treated is at a percentage of 39.92%. According to the Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association, nearly 12 million cubic metres of wastewater are being produced across Vietnam every day, which also contains the release of 87% untreated domestic and industrial wastewater into the environment. Splash Social Enterprises (SSE), Splash for short, globally provides both drinking and a handwashing station that helps distribute recyclable, conservable water stations that could last throughout the years. They sell their stations to governments and organizations at fair prices to be able to distribute water access to low-resourced institutions. Considering these fair actions, we take this social enterprise as an example of how they are helping to increase the human development barrier of economics.
