Air pollution is one of the biggest problems that Vietnam has been facing, focusing on SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities target 11.6 - Reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact on cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management, and specifically on 11.6.2 - Annual means of fine particulate matter in cities (pollution weightened). The government of Vietnam struggles to prevent air pollution from worsening due to weak policy enforcement, and due to the issues being big in Vietnam, and so many factors that contribute to the pollution. An average of 60,000 people per year in Vietnam have died due to air pollution. In 2024, the average AQI for Vietnam was 87 and was ranked 23rd for the most polluted country. Over 50% of air pollution is caused by traffic in Vietnam, as well as 30% from industrial activities and 10-15% from construction. However, the Vietnamese government has been slowly solving the problem bit by bit. The government has set a goal that by 2030, all new taxis are mandated to use electricity, which decreases the use of fossil fuels. This is why our group has the mission to reduce the amount of air pollution in Vietnam.
