“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” -Benjamin Franklin
In Vietnam, the issue of Dengue has been widespread, causing over 320,000 cases and 54 deaths reported in the 2019 outbreak alone. Though it has been a while since the outbreak, the problem is still real and happening. SDG 3.3, to fight communicable diseases, connects to this issue as this goal aims to combat diseases such as Dengue, AIDs, Tuberculosis, and many other neglected tropical diseases. And my group’s goal is to fight one of the list of diseases, and support the mitigation of it in Vietnam.
To connect this to a barrier to human development, the economic barrier is the main one. This is because the development barrier of economics is about inequality, finances, and infrastructure, and Dengue is related: Though there is not a cure for Dengue yet, vaccines and products for prevention exist, but some low-income households may not have good access to them. This not only makes the issue more complex, as the government and local hospitals provide help and treatment, but it would not reach everyone. It also makes prevention from Dengue crucial, especially in rural areas of Vietnam, due to their usually having rice paddies, lakes, and other irrigated areas where its conditions accelerate mosquito breeding. Our group’s goal is to help prevent Dengue from spreading, so that we reduce the number of people who need treatment at a hospital in the first place.
