“Resilience is built over time, but disaster can strike in an instant.” – Ban Ki-moon
In Vietnam’s northern indigenous regions, families living on steep forested slopes face growing danger each rainy season as landslides and soil erosion repeatedly wash out roads, damage homes, and cut off entire villages—an increasingly urgent reality reflected in the 300+ major landslides recorded in 2023. This shows how quickly the land is degrading and reveals a deeper meaning: the natural systems that once protected these communities are failing, placing Vietnam off-track from SDG Target 15.3, which calls for restoring degraded soil and preventing further erosion by 2030. The problem is complex because weakened forests make slopes unstable, and unstable slopes make it harder for forests to return, trapping communities in a cycle of vulnerability that conventional concrete solutions—too costly, heavy, and unsuitable for remote ethnic landscapes—cannot solve. If nothing changes, the soil will continue to collapse, indigenous forests will thin even further, and the people who depend on them will remain at risk. This is why The Everroots is creating biodegradable clay ACBs that can stabilize slopes now while breaking down slowly to let native plants and trees grow from seeds inside the blocks, take over, fulfilling our mission to regenerate Vietnam’s indigenous forests and strengthen the land’s natural stability.
