Our team has chosen to focus on SDG goal 12, target 5, indicator 12.5.1, which signifies the need for reduction of waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse to solve issues, particularly in this case, air pollution in Hanoi. Air pollution has been a major challenge in Hanoi, causing approximately 70,000 deaths annually all around Vietnam, directly impacting the Human Development Index(HDI), which seeks quality of life all around the world. The thick PM2.5 concentration impacts the health and living standards of many people living in Hanoi. It causes short-term respiratory issues that affect life expectancy, such as breathing difficulties and lung infections, as well as long-term risks like stroke, heart disease, and lung cancer. The WHO estimated that 60,000 deaths in Vietnam every year are linked to air pollution. Furthermore, it also disrupts the economic activities of many locals who rely on going outside to make money, as they have trouble breathing and moving around in such polluted air.
A specific institution supporting this issue is the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), working for the reduction in air pollution, specifically funding research on topics related to the major issue. The government has also introduced the Soc Son Waste-to-Energy Plant at the Nam Son Waste Treatment Complex in Trung Gia Commune. The plant processes 5000 tons of water and converts it into energy, decreasing significant amounts of waste in landfills. The complexity of the issue is created due to the lack of awareness, economic difficulties such as the increasing need for a quick cycle of resources due to the industrial revolution and development, and mainly, due to the high cost and low efficiency of recycling these wastes. Furthermore, approximately 1.5 million tons of rice straw are generated yearly, while only 10% are collected and recycled, gradually increasing the concern about these problems. This initiative is crucial as Hanoi’s air pollution has reached a rate of 416, not even a whole year ago, in January 2025, hitting the highest air quality index (AQI) rate. Our product will help reduce the impacts of burning rice husks and straws after harvest.
