“Thousands of people have lived without love, not one without water” - W. H. Auden
Our focused issue for Phoenix Nest is the lack of infrastructure in Banana Island, Vietnam, where they live in informal housing and don't have access to clean water, and when they do, it's often for the bare necessities.
Our target is 11.1 By 2030, ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums.” It has one indicator: “Proportion of urban population living in slums, informal settlements or inadequate housing”
Currently, development assistance (ODA) from the World Bank disbursements increased by 10% between 2021 and 2022, reaching $8.7 billion compared to $8.9 billion in 2022, and that has generally been lower than levels seen immediately after 2015. Additionally, an estimated $114 billion of investments per year is needed to achieve universal coverage of safely managed drinking water and sanitation by 2030. Vietnam is a major recipient of water aid and investment. Vietnam needed significant investment to address its water supply, sanitation, and wastewater treatment challenges, with an estimated $8.8 billion required by 2020 for the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector. The official development assistance (ODA) from international donors for Vietnam in the 2021-2025 period is estimated at VND 527 trillion (US$23 billion).
A specific institution that is reducing the lack of infrastructure and helping the target be achieved is the World Bank, because it provides significant lending for areas that need infrastructure, addressing the digital divide, and how that affects the barrier. They partner with organizations like UNICEF and the ODA to provide aid and water and sanitation improvements.
But to make these improvements is difficult due to a number of reasons. Firstly, there is a massive and persistent funding gap. This gap is very hard to fill, even with numerous amounts of donations. Second is the interconnected nature of infrastructure; this makes it hard to tear things down and to build as nature affects the project and nature is affected by the project. Some more challenges include policy and planning misalignment, social and environmental challenges, and weak governance and institutional frameworks.
In conclusion, this is why Aura Water Vietnam has the mission statement of improving access to safe water for people living in informal housing along the Red River in Hanoi. We will do this by creating safe, sustainable water filters for sanitisation and other purposes to make a real difference and improve the quality of people's lives, making a happier, healthier Vietnam.
