In 2023, Vietnam consumed about 21.6 million metric tons of rice, resulting in vast amounts of rice husks that were previously burned, contributing to air pollution. The Vietnamese government has banned this practice, leaving farmers with costly waste management challenges. Rice husks, which make up 20% of rice weight, can create valuable products like biochar and eco-friendly pet supplies. As Vietnam's air quality worsens, it is predicted to rise from an average AQI of 45 in the early 2000s to around 125 by 2050. Our project, “Rice & Play,” aims to tackle this issue. We focus on Sustainable Development Goal 12.2 by transforming rice husks into natural pet products. By repurposing these husks into items like pet beds and litter, we are promoting the Circular Economy that reduces pollution and enhances air quality, which can ultimately help improve the standard of living for all in Vietnam.
