Field Trips
Field Trips allow us to experience what we learn in theory in practice. There is significant manufacturing capacity in many different industries in and around Hanoi. We love to go and have a look. The real deal beats any YouTube clip. Through members of our school community we have been able to offer at least one field trip each year to our Design Technology students.
We are grateful to have in the past had students hosted for factory tours to these plants:
Welcomed by Managing Director (and UNIS parent) Matt Kantrud and his team, the students toured the impressive factory floor, warehouse and offices. The Polaris plant close to Hanoi produces two models of Indian Motorcycles. Both the bikes and the engines are assembled on-site. The state-of-the-art facility was opened in 2024 ago and is a great illustration of the practical implementation of many of the concepts students had been studying in their design classes. The staff at the plant was proud to share the modern warehousing, computer-aided design, quality assurance, lean manufacturing and advanced tooling in the factory.
After a great introductory presentation, Director (and UNIS parent) Anthony Jolly and his team took our students on a tour of the Midway Metals Marine factory floor. Based on provided specifications and tolerances, Midway Marine engineers, manufactures and delivers high-quality stainless steel components for yacht builders and marine component manufacturers. Students could see up close how raw stainless steel was cut, welded and polished. The modern approach to the organization of the factory floor illustrated the principles of Kaizen (5s - Avoidance of 7 wastes) very well. It was insightful to see how technical drawings were broken down for use in different departments in the plant. And the sophisticated application of material science related to metals, made our syllabus content come alive. The plant owners clearly took pride in their work and ensuring their employees have the best possible working conditions.
