Artist Statement:

Titled Wake Up To The Moon, this body of work explores self image and identity through intimate views into the imaged lives of queer Asian men. The title refers to the Vietnamese lunar calendar as well as the sense of disorientation and loneliness that comes with residing between Vietnam and the United States. Seen from the perspective of the moon, the subject matter celebrates Vietnamese culture and tradition while questioning its long history of disregard for queer people. The figurative paintings are informed by image research and collecting of historical objects, film, and literature. Inspired by Vietnamese silk painting, the work depicts queerness not only as a sexual experience but also a way of living and a lens through which we view the world.
