Esteban Brignole Award

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of EQUIFASE 2022, it is a pleasure to announce that the winner of the Esteban A. Brignole Award is:

Prof. Selva Pereda

Chemical Engineering Department, National University of the South, Argentina.

Selva Pereda

Selva’s research interests are focused on developing new, efficient, and sustainable process technologies to convert biomass into compounds of industrial interest (fuels, chemicals, solvents). Her research activities fall into three main areas:

1. Conceptual design of products and processes for biorefinery development,

2. Phase equilibrium engineering, and

3. Pressure-intensified technologies (reactors, extraction, and fractionation) with noncontaminant condensed gases (supercritical fluids).

Her contributions to the calculation and prediction of thermodynamic properties of systems close to supercritical conditions and of mixtures related to biorefinery processes are significant and recognized worldwide.

As the awardee, she will be the guest speaker commissioned to deliver the III Esteban A. Brignole Lecture.

ESTEBAN BRIGNOLE

Professor Esteban A. Brignole is recognized as the most prominent figure in the field of Applied Thermodynamics in Latin America. His major research contributions are the pioneering work on the molecular design of solvents and the novel integration of rigorous thermodynamic methods to process engineering, which have gained him international recognition.

The leitmotif of his 50-year-long career has been the development of Chemical Engineering in Iberoamerican countries, where he has contributed to the establishment of successful programs of industry/academy collaboration and international cooperation. His idea of organizing Equifase, while still in the early stages of his career, is an example of successful action to promote regional integration.

The most prominent characteristic of his personality is his passion for progress and innovation, following Professor Brignole’s favorite quote from George Bernard Shaw (in: Maxims for Revolutionists):

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

FORMER AWARDEES

PEDRO ALCÂNTARA PESSOA - 2015

Pedro de Alcântara Pessoa Filho is professor at the Chemical Engineering Department in the Engineering School of the University of São Paulo (USP) since 2003. He graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University of Campinas (1995), where he also completed his master's degree (1998) and doctorate (2002). In 2011 he became Associate Professor in Chemical Thermodynamics at USP, and in 2014 he was appointed full professor at the same university. In 2007-2008, he held a postdoctoral internship at the Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, Germany, in the group of Professor Gerd Maurer, and in 2013-2014 he was visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, in the group of Professor John Prausnitz. His current main area of research is Phase Equilibrium Thermodynamics, with emphasis in the study of biomolecule purification processes and applications in other fields of knowledge, such as Petroleum and Food Engineering.

João Araújo Pereira Coutinho - 2018

João Manuel Costa de Araújo Pereira Coutinho is a full professor at the Chemistry Department of University of Aveiro (UA) since 1997, and currently is the vice-director of CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials. He graduated in Chemical Engineering at the University of Porto (1992) and got his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (1995); he was also a researcher at the Institut Français du Petrole, France (1996). He leads a multidisciplinary research group focused on the development of green solvents and novel separation processes for biorefinery and circular economy. His research areas include the exploration and fossil fuel transport, the production and formulation of biofuels, the characterization of non-conventional solvents for the development of new products and chemical processes, the characterization of biodegradable polymers, and biotechnology. Professor Coutinho is also interested in the production of biosurfactants.

INSTRUCTIONS

As the person who gives its name to the prize, nominees to the Esteban A. Brignole Award are expected to combine technical excellence with selfless service to promote progress, innovation, and collaboration. Regardless of their citizenship, candidates should be professionals working in South America, Central America, Portugal, or Spain, either in the academic or industrial sectors. Nominees for the Esteban A. Brignole Award should have attended at least one of the previous Equifase Conferences and must be age 50 or less on December 31, 2022. Members of the Local Organizing Committee are not eligible for the Award. Self-nominations will not be considered.

If a member of the International Committee is either nominated as a valid candidate for the Award, or listed as a reference for someone else’s candidature, this person will not vote and will be excluded from any discussion related to the selection process. The members of the International Scientific Committee will select the winner, in a process coordinated by Prof. Pedro de Alcantara Pessoa Filho. The winner will be a guest speaker at Equifase 2022, delivering the III Esteban A. Brignole Lecture.
