MODULE 3
I am committed and accountable.
To combine commitment to, and passion for,
our mandate, with accountability to all stakeholders.
To combine commitment to, and passion for,
our mandate, with accountability to all stakeholders.
Committed and accountable team members bring value to the teams and organizations, they work for. Committed personnel are more determined, proactive and productive in their roles, and hold themselves and others accountable to achieve set objectives.
In the 2021 Global Staff Survey, 93% of UNFPA staff reported that it was clear how their role contributes to UNFPA’s objectives. Similarly, in the 2020 Global Online Survey on Culture, 72% of staff agreed that there is a clear connection between UNFPA’s Strategic Plan and the work UNFPA’s teams perform. However, the same survey found that 33% of staff disagreed that UNFPA as organization encourages fast decision-making and implementation. During the inter-regional culture consultations in 2019/2020, participants also expressed that they felt that there was oftentimes a focus on outputs rather than outcomes.
Against this background, this module will explore how we can hold ourselves and others committed to and accountable for the work we do, and how it contributes to UNFPA’s mandate.
As we aim to promote and uphold our aspirational culture, this module explains and explores the following concepts to support even stronger commitment and accountability at UNFPA.
Below are some of the key techniques that are included in Module 3 and that aim to help you demonstrate commitment and accountability in your daily interactions at work.
Accountable leadership
To become a truly effective leader, you need to find a balance between holding your team accountable, and also giving them the space to be autonomous and grow. For tips on how to lead from behind and creating space for your team to grow, download Module 3 and refer to Pages 8-9.
Peer-to-peer accountability
Peer-to-peer accountability can feel uncomfortable but if both parties are committed to growing and developing their skills, it can help teams become more efficient and productive, while also building relationships. What to do if you do not feel you can speak up
In some instances, we might not feel comfortable speaking up and dealing with a situation immediately. There are a range of steps you can take if this is the case, such as protecting your mental and physical health and engaging in constructive dissent. To learn more about how to handle these situations, download Module 3 and refer to Page 14.
Simon Sinek: "what's our why?
Having clarity around big picture strategic goals can greatly influence our actions and behaviours - however big or small they may feel - toward that long-term vision. Finding your "why", as described by Simon Sinek, a bestselling author and speaker on business strategy, can help you to connect with the work you are doing and increase your commitment in your day-to-day work. How to successfully lead from behind
Conventional knowledge may have us believe that leadership is about power and influence; however, UNFPA's aspirational culture promotes new forms of leadership and accountability wherever it exists. We envision leaders who learn the art of holding space for others through providing opportunities and empowering team members.
