Belonging is the feeling of security and support when there is a sense of acceptance, inclusion, and identity for a member of a certain group and is a critical factor in improving engagement and performance in any organization.
In the first of its kind Global Online Survey on Culture in 2020, 89% of UNFPA staff reported that they felt inspired by UNFPA's mandate. The Global Staff Survey in 2021 also showed that 74% of staff feel as though staff at UNFPA have a shared sense of purpose. While these data points are encouraging, there is still room for strengthening the sense of belonging at UNFPA.
Against this background, this module zooms in on the concept of belonging and provides various resources that managers and personnel can use to reinforce the sense of belonging across UNFPA.
As we aim to promote and uphold our aspirational culture, this module explains and explores the following concepts to support an even stronger sense of belonging.
Below are some of the key techniques that are included in Module 2 and that aim to help you promote a sense of belonging in your daily interactions at work.
Being a Culture Champion
UNFPA's Culture Initiative should be championed by passionate personnel who want to spend their time in a workplace that is uplifting and that they are excited to be a part of. A UNFPA Culture Champion is someone who believes that a positive organizational culture which aligns personnel to common goals can have a significant impact on UNFPA and our ability to deliver on our mandate. To find out more about how you can embody Our Principles and be a Culture Champion, download Module 2 and refer to Page 8.
The Implicit Association Test
Implicit bias is when individuals act on unconscious prejudice and stereotypes without realizing it, especially surrounding traditionally disadvantaged groups. One way that you can assess your implicit bias is to take the Implicit Association Test where you can assess your implicit bias surrounding religion, race, sexuality, weight, and more. To learn more about recognizing and reducing your implicit bias, download Module 2 and refer to Pages 19-21.
Cultural dimensions of communication
Professor Geert Hofstede, author of Culture's Consequences, introduced six dimensions of culture. You can use the Hofstede Insights tool to compare and learn more about different cultures and to start conversations with your colleagues about your preferred ways of working. To learn more about the cultural dimensions, download Module 2 and refer to Page 29.
Onboarding and welcoming
A seamless onboarding and welcoming experience supports a range of benefits within the workplace, such as stronger employee experience, higher employee engagement, and a stronger sense of belonging. There are a range of tools included in Module 2 that can help ensure a good onboarding experience. These include hosting welcoming sessions, a grand entrance announcement, and playing 'ties that bind'. To learn more, download Module 2 and refer to Pages 30-32.
Question time and dedicated feedback
At UNFPA, we want to create a culture of accountability and transparency with our leadership. One way to open the streams of communication is by implementing question time in which personnel can ask questions and give feedback on how they are being supported in their work. To find out more about how to host dedicated feedback sessions and question times, download Module 2 and refer to Page 41.

The purpose of the pulse survey is to assess to which extent UNFPA personnel are already promoting a sense of belonging in their daily interactions. This will help us understand whether UNFPA is moving in the direction of its aspirational culture and which additional actions are needed to fully actualize it.
