In April of 2019 I was hospitalized for kidney issues. Through this experience I learned about all of the hard work that physicians and healthcare professionals put into their job everyday. Before I was hospitalized I was a business major, but since this experience I have decided to redirect my future to healthcare. Watching the way that the healthcare providers worked to help me get better inspired me.
Having a real life experience in the hospital will actually help me in the future so that I can connect with patients and even coworkers to always do my best. I know that everyone that helped me was working their hardest to get me feeling better. Working in healthcare would be such a rewarding career because you get the opportunity to grow as a person as you witness so many different kinds of people on the daily basis. This artifact has truly opened my eyes to all of the career paths that one can take with a health systems management degree. This artifact closely reflects the reason that I have chosen to take the healthcare route for my future.
Since changing my major, I was hospitalized once more in November. By this point I had been over halfway through two different HSMT courses. Having another experience in the hospital after changing majors has been educational for me in learning about this field of business. It connected a lot of dots and unknowns for me as well. I believe that to be fully successful in this field you need to see things from both sides, the patient and the healthcare provider. By having this knowledge, it gives me the ability to know how difficult being hospitalized could be for patients.
