Tailored Jacket

Spring 2019

The tailoring project introduces the designer to tactical and precision handwork and sewing skills. The designer created a women's tailored jacket using the traditional fabric of wool.

Intellect on Tailoring.

For this project, I needed to learn the basics of tailoring such as fabric selection, lining, stitch work, and construction.

Construction

For the construction of the garment, I learned what was needed to create a tailored jacket. The important part of the piece was the lapel and collar. I studied the different facing applied to make the jacket more structured and fitted. This is the first project I had a lining which included a box pleat at the center back. The suit had a back vent as well. This was the project that introduced me to the construction of pockets like single bound and double-bound.

Outcomes

This project was one of the challenging ones as a designer since I value having creative freedom. For this project, there was little to alternate choices the designer could make to personalize the garment. Creative freedom played a part in selecting what fabric to use and what pockets to create. It was fun constructing a lining since it was something I usually try to steer away from being that I do not like when garments are lined. I also learned a handful of hand sewing techniques that help bring a garment to its' sleekness which I plan to utilize in the future.
