Hello, My name is Yaa (Ya-ah), and I go by she/her pronouns. I was born and raised in Ghana West Africa, and moved to the United States in 2017. Lived in New York for 6 months before moving to Shakopee Minnesota. I am currently majoring in Business and Marketing, hope to minor in computer science too. I'm not sure if I would like to go to the Business world but as time goes on I do hope to find something I am passionate about. Currently, I have been putting myself out there to try new hobbies and so far one I have come to fall in love with is capturing memories. I capture memories through the lens of my digital camera!! I have come to realize how memories are in life that's why I would love to save them to share with my family in the future!!! It's nice to meet you all virtually!!!!
Introduction
Memoir: “As I got better, I wondered what I would do with the rest of my life. I went back to making a video every Tuesday and a weekly podcast with my brother, but I wasn’t writing. That fall and winter were the longest I’d gone without trying to write for an audience since I was fourteen years old. I suppose I missed writing, but in the way, you miss someone you used to love” (Green 12).
“I’d written a few of the reviews back in 2014—the one about Canada geese, and also one on Diet Dr. Pepper. In early 2018, I sent those reviews to Sarah and asked for her thoughts” (Green 13)
Research: “Around the same time, as I began to regain my sense of balance, I reread the work of my friend and mentor Amy Krouse Rosenthal, who’d died a few months earlier. She’d once written, “For anyone trying to discern what to do with their life: Pay attention to what you pay attention to. That’s pretty much all the info you need.” My attention had become so fractured, and my world had become so loud, that I wasn't paying attention to what I was paying attention to. But when I put myself into the reviews as Sarah suggested, I felt like for the first time in years I was at least trying to pay attention to what I pay attention to” (green 14)
Reflection: “My life lacked balance and so I was devastated by a balance disorder. I spent a month drawing a straight line of a trail only to be told that life is never simple paths—only dizzying labyrinths folding in on themselves. Even now I’m structuring this introduction like a maze, coming back to places I thought I’d left” (Green 10).
General Impression: Through Green’s journey, we get to see all the things he went through, from his trip with his brother to being in the hospital and later on reflecting on his life. One thing that intrigues me is the idea of paying attention to what you pay attention to. Sometimes we as humans get stuck on the negative part of our life that we avoid, the positive part. This will not only affect us mentally due to overthinking but will also show a reflection in our lives. Because what we believe can become our reality. And believing that your life is terrible, will stop you from improving your it because you already believe that and don't see the point of taking the steps to make it better.
Lascaux Cave Painting
Memoir: “In September of 1940, an eighteen-year-old mechanic named Marcel Ravidat was walking in the southwestern French countryside, when his dog, Robot, disappeared down a hole. When Robot returned, Ravidat thought the dog might have discovered a rumored secret passageway to the nearby Lascaux Manor” (Green 39).
“After World War II, the French government took ownership of the site, and the cave was opened to the public in 1948. Marcel and Jacques both served as a tour guide. When Pablo Picasso saw the cave paintings on a visit that year, he reportedly said, “We have invented nothing” (Green 41)
Research: “At Lascaux, there are also some “negative hand stencils,” as they are known to art historians. These paintings were created by pressing one hand with fingers splayed against the wall of the cave and then blowing pigment, leaving the area around the hand-painted. Similar hand stencils have been found in caves around the world. We’ve found memories of hands from up to forty thousand years ago from Indonesia to Australia to Africa to the Americas. These hand stencils remind us of how different life was in the distant past—amputations, likely from frostbite, were common in Europe, and so you often see negative hand stencils with three or four fingers. Life was difficult and often short: As many as a quarter of women died in childbirth, and around 50 percent of children did not live to the age of five” (Green 41)
Reflection: “I am extremely happy that my children are no longer three, and yet to look at their little hands from those early artworks is to be inundated with a strange soul-splitting joy. Those pictures remind me that my kids are not just growing away from me, but running toward their own lives. But I am applying this means to their hand stencils and the complicated relationship between art and its viewers is never more fraught than when we look deeply into the past” (Green 39).
General impression:
One thing I found intriguing was the reflection when Green looked at his children's early artwork. This shows that the artwork represented memories, and will continue to as his children get older. It is a piece that will always be there to look back at.
Diet Dr Pepper
Memoir: “In 1935, when Foots was a senior in college, he started working as a Dr. Pepper salesman. He retired fifty-one years later as CEO of a soft drink company worth over $400 million. By 2020, the Keurig Dr Pepper corporation, which owns among many hand brands, 7up, RC cola, and four different kinds of root beer is valued at over $40 billion. Almost all of its products are some form of sweetened or caffeinated water” (Green 49)
Research: “But as Dr. Aaron Carroll puts it in his book The Bad Food Bible, “There’s a potential—and, likely, very real—harm from consuming added sugar. There is likely none from artificial sweeteners” (Green 51)
Reflection:
"I don’t labor under the delusion that Diet Dr Pepper is good for me, but, in moderation, it also probably isn’t bad for me. Drinking too much Diet Dr Pepper can be bad for your teeth and may increase other health risks” (Green 51)
General impression: I find it funny how relatable this story is, where Green talks about how bad Doctor Pepper is for our health but drinks it in moderation anyway. I feel like that's what most of us think, we know some things are not good for us but as long as we do it in "moderation" it's okay. But this can lead to damage over time.
Mental health- I am a big mental health person and I am interested in whether society will be more open to it as time goes on.
Social media/technologies in our society- Is there any advantage that comes from both?
Ai- I'm interested in it because I am curious to see how far it goes.
Content form:
The premise of the video was about John Green's life which later led to a deep discussion about humanity and the planets. Later on, talk about temporal range of humanity.
What caught my attention was when he started about the apocalypse coming but it never seemed to happen.
l heard John Green's voice and as time went on there were different sound effects, tense sometimes and low sometimes. There was also a transition at the beginning and end.
It started with him introducing himself and talking about the topic he was reviewing. Also added his life story there to relate it to the story itself. he later on went deeper into the world and Temporal range.
Paratext:
I used WNYC studio to listen to this podcast and the description did not frame the topic, it talked about the Anthropocene itself. It talked about how it is the geological age where human activity shaped the planet. I did not use any transcript because I wanted to focus on listening instead of reading. I Heard one ad, that promoted Policy Junior which is an insurance. Also saw logos that promoted the Wync website and also some logos for different businesses like NJPR, and WQXR.
Listening Environment:
I was eating in the kitchen while listening.
I was also typing.
I listened in one sitting
I was eating
I used my iPad to listen.
I used headphones
Media Literacy:
I felt more focused than bored while listening. Depending on what I read, I tend to not have a long attention span so although I had the podcast in the background while typing, I was still able to focus on what he was saying. And I do feel like the podcast is so much enjoyable compared to the reading Because I was able to engage more.
Title: Should I have a child?
Host: Rose
Link:https://www.futureadvice.club/2020/06/30/should-i-have-kids/
Sarah: A 24-year-old college student, who spoke about not wanting kids due to climate change. Also to avoid complicated questions in the future.
Is it okay to bring a kid into this world? I'm interested in this topic because I'm curious and want to know the answer because having a child is hard but not knowing where the world is going is frightening. The world is not improving so far and has a lot of women questioning whether they want to have a child as they fear it will affect the world, not only that children are not lifestyle choices!! Examples of life choices are materialistic things. Children are not materialistic things but actual human beings and to have them parents need to make sure they are ready to care for these kids instead of having them a lifestyle. Currently, there are about 7 billion and there is a possibility that it will increase in the future. But there are a certain number of humans/organisms that can live on the earth. We are curious to know how to live on this planet which may lead to a choice that is detrimental to the Earth. At the end of the day, we people focus on our feelings and hope to be said yes by scientists.

The strongest element was overall choosing a different writing style. I feel like I tend to focus my writing on mental health or something that has to do with it. So this time I wanted to challenge myself. I changed my topic halfway through, as I wanted something fun and new. A challenge was trying to remember what I went through as my writing was based on memories of moments in my life. And I am proud I was able to revisit that memory and be able to get it into writing. but overall I am happy I was able to get out of my comfort zone and do something different. A personal writing goal is to explore more and get out of my comfort zone when writing. And it is okay if the writing doesn't sound right at the beginning as it always comes together at the end. I will give myself a 4/5 for ratings because I'm genuinely proud of writing differently and was able to accomplish my goal of writing something fun.
"Metacognition requires that writers thnk about their mental processes" I find this code interesting because just like everythings writers need to make sure they are in a good mental well being before writing in order for it to run smoothly. As not being in a good mental state can affect the way they write.
Question: will education be worth it in the future?.
Summary: Although college used to be cheaper in the past( about 50 yrs ago), We have all seen how much it has risen in order to balance with infilation. i believe that this question is worth asking because the rich keep getting richer where as middle class is going dow to poor and the poor keeps getting poorer. Although higher education is important, there will come a time where most people wpuldnt be able to afford so they will resort to other solution. But for the poeple who choose additional education, there is a high chance of being in debts for a lifetime. SO I would like to know if it will be worth and will it even be accessable to people in need of it.

I would like to interview my previous professor from my first year class. I chose this professor because I know how teaching is a passion for him, but I also know he believe that college should not be expensive. I will have an inperson interview with him.
