Hi everyone I'm Abe. I was born and raised in the Madison Wisconsin area and am a freshman at the U. My major currently is declared as MIS but may change in the future I still don't know exactly what I want to study yet. I'm a huge sports fan and grew up playing football, hockey and lacrosse pretty much my entire life. I am currently a member of the mens club lacrosse team at the U and am having a blast. I also enjoy playing video games, binging shows and hanging with my friends in my free time. I'm excited to get know and work with everyone in this class!
Anthropocene
Introduction
Memoir: "I came home to Indianapolis and blazed a trail between my children’s tree house and the little room where my wife and I often work, a room that depending on your worldview is either an office or a shed" (page 9).
Research: "The Anthropocene is a proposed term for the current geologic age, in which humans have profoundly reshaped the planet and its biodiversity" (page 12).
Reflection: "Hank had been with me on the book tour that fall of 2017, and to pass the time on long drives between cities, we’d try to one-up each other with absurd Google user reviews for the places we drove past" (page 12).
General Impression: Overall I think this is a really cool way of showing that awful things can happen in life and deciding how you respond to these kinds of adversity can change your life. I can't imagine the pain and suffering Green felt when he found out he had labyrinthitis. His entire life had suddenly changed out of no where and even though he was diagnosed with this awful disease he still stuck with what he loved. I found it very inspiring to see Green chase his passion and eventually create with the help of his brother The Anthropocene Reviewed.
Cave Paintings
Memoir: " I remember my son’s face as he lifted his hand and looked absolutely shocked to see the shape of his splayed fingers still on the paper, a semipermanent record of himself" (page 39).
Research: "In 1942, Jacques and Marcel joined the French Resistance together. Jacques was captured and sent to a prison camp, but both survived the war, and when they got home, they both immediately returned to the cave" (page 40).
Reflection: "Why, for instance, are there no paintings of reindeer, which we know were the primary source of food for the Paleolithic humans who lived in that cave? Why is the human form so rarely depicted?" (page 41).
General Impression: Overall I found this chapter to be very intriguing. I really enjoyed the beginning of this chapter and how Green described how the paintings were discovered. His use of imagery made me feel like I could see the boys themself discover and protect the cave from the Nazis. I also found his use of hands as a motif throughout the passage to be very unique. It felt like he was using hands as a way of human creativity and our connection to our ancestors past lives.
Canada Geese
Memoir: But they also allow me to feel like there’s still some proper nature in my highly sanitized, biologically monotonous suburban life. Even if geese have become mundane, there remains something awe-inspiring about seeing them fly overhead in a perfect V formation" (page 58).
Research: "Canada geese were particularly susceptible to so-called “live decoys.” Hunters captured geese, rendered them flightless, and kept them in ponds or fields. The call of these captured geese then attracted flocks of wild ones, which could be shot." (page 56).
Reflection: "Like us, the success of their species has affected their habitats: A single Canada goose can produce up to one hundred pounds of excrement per year, which has led to unsafe Ecoli levels in lakes and ponds where they gather" (page 57).
General Impression: I really like the way Green connected the history of Canada Geese and geese in general to humanity. Through his description of geese and their natural habitats he explains how geese came to be an outcasted species for most humans. He describes that geese love to live in large flat areas and most of these areas where geese used to live were taken over by humanity. Parks and golf courses are typically homes of geese and most people might find this annoying but Green does a really good job of explaining that they have no where else to go. I really enjoyed this chapter!
P1 pre-writing
Stealth 2 driver - This past summer I tried to get into golf and play consistently and I suddenly found out how addicting the sport was. At the start of summer I was using really old clubs that my grandpa had given me when I was young. I wasn't very good and I realized if I waned to get better I should invest in better equipment. I ordered new irons and a new driver and during the process fell in love with looking at the newest clubs. The second I saw the stealth 2 driver I knew I wanted to try it out but haven't had the chance to do so. I think it would be a lot of fun to review this club. Also Tiger Woods has used this driver throughout the last year.
Tiesto concert - This past fall I attended a Tiesto concert at the Armory and it was a loft fun. I have a lot of videos saved to reflect on and I think it would be a cool thing to write a review on.
Essentials Hoodie - I'm a big fan of comfy sweatshirts and I've heard essentials hoodies are super comfy. I also really like the look of the essentials hoodies so it would be a well used investment if I decide to get one.
Anthropocene Reviewed Podcast
Part 1:
Text: Content & Form
The general premise of the episode relates to humanity and describes our brief existence on planet earth. Green describes the we have harmed our planet in such a short time of existence in comparison to other species and he mentions that humanity can be represented as an apocalypse to all other species.
What caught my attention most was when Green described his thoughts on humanity as a whole and stated that like all creatures humanity one day will become extinct.
In the podcast I watched there was soft music throughout the episode and a male speaker.
Paratext
For my platform I just looked up the episode on safari and the first liked link I clicked on worked.
There was a description it stated that John Green reviews the concept of humanity's temporal range.
I did not use a transcript.
There was one ad and it was about purchasing coffee mugs that had the Anthropocene Reviewed written on it.
There was a background page that had a timeline showing the begging of the world to Johns birthday.
Listening Environment and Experience
I listened to this in my dorm on my futon
I was not doing anything else
I listened in one sitting
I had just taken a shower right before listening to this podcast episode
I used my phone to listen
I listened on my phone speaker
Part 2
After listening to this podcast I felt like I enjoyed this more than actually physically reading the text. I felt like my attention span was much more reliable when it came to the podcast due to the soft music in the background guiding me through the episode. I also like listening to someone else read because it allows me to think and reflect about the text more than if I were to read it myself. Overall I feel like I'm using less brain power to read and more brain power to listen and understand what is being conveyed throughout the passage.

Should I cryopreserve my dog?
https://www.futureadvice.club/2020/07/14/should-i-cryopreserve-my-dog/
Podcast Reflection:
After listening to should I cryopreserve my dog I found this podcast very interesting and surprising. When I was deciding what podcast to choose I saw dogs? and I thought to myself I like dogs so I selected this podcast. I was expecting some kind of explanation of what roles dog will have in the future but I later discovered that my guess was completely off. The entire podcast was about cryopreservation with dogs and what that process is. Cryopreservation is a process that preserves organelles, cells, tissues, or any other biological constructs by cooling the samples to very low temperatures. In the podcast the speaker mentioned that families if they were to pursue this process typically spend around eight thousand dollars. I wasn't expecting the process to be this expensive and this caught me off guard. Another key thing I took away from this podcast was when the speaker described the grief process of losing a pet. She mentioned that cryopreservation to her shouldn't be a decision made while in the grieving process and recommended deciding wether you wish to cryopreserve your pet before your pets death so you have a clearly thought out plan of what you want to do with your pet after its death.

Self Reflection memo
After completing my first project I think my overall structure of my review was my strongest element in my writing. I think I did a good job of being very clear on what I was going to write about and how I was going to review my driver. One challenge I faced while doing my review was explaining complicated aspects within the game of golf in a simple and easy to understand way. When I completed my review I was pretty happy with my overall clearness throughout my review. For my personal writing goal I plan to spend more time on creating a detailed outline to help me think while writing. I think if I spent more time planning an outline to guide me through my writing before I wrote my review it would have helped speed up my personal writing process. One key thing I would really like to work on is my flow and vocabulary usage in my writing. I want my writing to feel like a mature and engaging read for my readers. For my self assessment score I would give myself an eight out of ten in terms of my rating. I'm giving myself this score because I worked hard on my review and when I completed it I was happy with my product. I feel like my review could flow a little better. I felt like I may have over explained a few times in my review but I felt it was helpful for my readers if they didn't know much about golf and how it works.
Metacognition is not Cognition response
Sentence: In the end, while cognition remains critical to effective writing, it is metacognition that endows writers with a certain control over their work, regardless of the situation in which they operate.
Response: I chose this sentence because the second I read it it immediately stuck with me. I really liked how this sentence described metacognition as a term of control of ones personal writing under multiple circumstances. This effected my thoughts about my own writing through the control aspect of metacognition. I plan to keep this in mind for my future writing and use this to help control my writing under different circumstances of writing throughout the rest of this semester.
Preliminary Project Description
Is the new Apple Vision Pro going to change tech for the upcoming future?
I chose to deep dive into research about the new apple vision pros that have recently came out and study what functions this new technology can perform. I personally believe this creation is the stepping stone to an entire new world of technology in the future. Through advancement and evolution of the apple vision pro I wouldn't be surprised to see some form of meta verse eventually developed that everyone can be apart of similar to the movie ready player one. I also imagine the entire health care system we have today will be completely different in the future due to the apple vision pros. I have seen lots of articles and videos showing the apple vision pros being used for medicine and surgery practice in a 3d view. This a is a huge groundbreaking advancement in health care technology and I am excited to see where this can lead us in the future.

I plan on interviewing my oldest brother for this project. He is a sales manager at AT&T and sells apple products for a living and is very knowledgeable when it comes to new tech and what it could mean for our future. I also think he has a really good point of view for this project since he gets to sell these accessories to all kinds of different people for different uses and he could help give me ideas on what people are buying these virtual reality goggles for.
