What can I be doing now?

Class-specific suggestions for ways to support career and professional development.

MS-1s

  • Learn and Explore! Check out the new career and professional development website.

  • Review the Specialty Pages to learn more about specialties of interests, what they value in residency applications, and more!

  • Check out Careers in Medicine to review articles and take assessments to help support your career discernment process. Reach out to Maija Braaten at resapp@umn.edu or mbraaten@umn.edu if you need help with access.

  • Attend your individual and group Faculty Advising meetings to help with answering questions and discussing ways to get the most out of your summer.

MS-2s

Balancing Step 1 preparation and beginning MS-3 curriculum are the highest priorities. As your schedules allow, you may want to consider the following:

  • Learn and Explore! Check out the new career and professional development website.

  • Review the Specialty Pages to learn more about specialties of interests, what they value in residency applications, and more!

  • Update your CV. You can find resources to help you in the Learn and Explore page and Careers in Medicine.

  • Consider doing an informational interview to learn more about specialties you are considering. You can find information on how to do this in Careers in Medicine and contact Specialty Experts to help you get started.

MS-3s

  • Residency Launchpad will begin the week of April 11th-April 21st. This is a virtual series that will cover essentials for residency application preparation to help prepare you for success. It is a combination of asynchronous videos and handouts and live Zoom panels that will also be recorded as resources to watch on demand. Watch your email for emails from resapp@umn.edu containing access information on the asynchronous content and sign-up to attend the live Zoom panels and presubmit questions.

  • If you have not already done so, resister with ERAS. You should have received a token to be able to add your contact information and create slots for your letter authors. If you need a token, email Maija at resapp@umn.edu to have it emailed to you.

  • Letters of Recommendation. Be sure to connect with potential letter authors as soon as possible after completing clinical rotations to request a strong letter for your ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System) profile. You can find useful information on letters of recommendation and much more in Careers in Medicine.

MS-4s

Pay it forward! Complete the Texas STAR survey ASAP if you have not already.

Commencement on May 6th from 2-4 p.m. at Northrop Auditorium. Watch for information from Rachel Rudeen for all of the details. Celebrate your success as you prepare for residency.

Go forth and conquer!
