Our Residency program offers 5 pathways for residents who wish to focus their time and learning on different aspects of medicine. Some pathways can be done in combination with each other, and most can be done on either a fellowship or non-fellowship trajectory.
Overview:
The Clinician Educator Pathway equips residents with the knowledge and experience to pursue academic medicine careers with a focus on teaching, curriculum design, and educational leadership.
Requirements:
Teaching elective during PGY-2 or PGY-3
Quarterly seminar series on medical education topics
Scholarly project in education
Electives & Opportunities:
Residents gain hands-on experience teaching medical students in clinical and classroom settings (e.g., ECG course, VALUE/REACH). Electives may include developing teaching sessions, curriculum design, or advanced workshops on feedback and educational theory.
Mentorship & Career Preparation:
Dedicated mentorship supports residents in navigating academic career paths, developing teaching portfolios, and pursuing opportunities in medical education. Faculty guide skill development in feedback, coaching, and curriculum design.
Overview:
The Global Medicine Pathway offers residents the opportunity to train at one of many partnered sites around the world or close to home to participate in multicultural and cross-cultural clinical training.
Requirements:
Complete Online and In-Person Global Health Course
Participate in a Global Medicine rotation at an approved site (international or domestic rotation) during residency
Complete a research, educational, or advocacy project focused on global health (research, poster presentation, case presentation, update at a GMLS lecture)
Attend 6 Global Medicine Lecture Series events over your residency

Mentorship & Career Preparation:
Completion of all GM pathway requirements allows residents to sit for the internationally-recognized Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine & Travelers’ Health (CTropMed®) from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, or the Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene from the UK-based Royal College of Physicians. We are the only residency program in the US that offers the ability to receive these certifications in clinical tropical medicine during the course of your training!
Overview:
The Hospital Medicine Pathway prepares residents for careers as hospitalists through immersive clinical experiences, quality improvement work, and structured mentorship. Residents gain exposure to diverse models of inpatient care across both UMMC and Regions.
Requirements:
Hospitalist rotations in PGY-2 and PGY-3 at UMMC and Regions Hospital
Completion of a quality improvement or academic project
Participation in 3–4 pathway meetings annually
Electives & Opportunities:
Residents can select experiences in rural hospital medicine, advanced POCUS, subspecialty inpatient care (e.g., Hem/Onc, Pulm), perioperative medicine, or telemedicine. Advanced learning may include SHM Leadership Academy or POCUS certification.
Mentorship & Career Preparation:
Each resident is paired with a hospitalist mentor and supported in CV review, interview
preparation, and leadership development. Career panels and leadership workshops provide additional preparation for early career hospitalist practice.
Overview:
The Physician Advocacy Pathway is a new pilot program designed to support residents in developing advocacy skills and pursuing projects aligned with their interests in health equity and policy. Supported by a two-year grant, the pathway emphasizes flexibility, innovation, and mentorship.
Requirements:
Health Equity and Human Rights elective (1 month)
Human Rights and Health Advocacy course (seven 2-hour evening workshops)
Individualized capstone project focused on advocacy, policy, or community engagement
Electives & Opportunities:
Residents may integrate advocacy projects with other rotations such as global health or Indian Health Service experiences. Opportunities include writing op-eds, legislative engagement, community organizing, or institutional policy change.
Mentorship & Career Preparation:
Pathway faculty provide personalized mentorship and connect residents with community leaders, activists, and organizations to strengthen skills and networks for a career in advocacy
Overview:
The Primary Care Pathway is designed to support residents pursuing outpatient and community-based careers, offering priority scheduling for continuity experiences and tailored electives that build skills for ambulatory practice.
Requirements:
There are no strict requirements; instead, the pathway is individualized to align with each resident’s career goals. Residents typically complete fewer inpatient rotations in PGY-2 and PGY-3, replaced with additional longitudinal primary care blocks.
Electives & Opportunities:
Residents may rotate at community primary care clinics (VA Maplewood, HealthPartners Maplewood, Fairview Wyoming/Lakes) and pursue electives in women’s health, geriatrics, HIV care, dermatology, sports medicine, home-based medicine, or procedures (IUD placement, biopsies).
Mentorship & Career Preparation:
Pathway residents have access to faculty mentorship, intermittent check-ins, and priority scheduling for primary care-focused experiences. Career development is supported through panel discussions, interview preparation, and CV review.
