We will be hosting Second Look visits for up to 36 candidates who want a structured opportunity to visit our program and the Twin Cities.
Second Look dates are tentatively planned for Friday, February 13 and Friday, February 20. Each date has space for up to 18 candidates. We encourage you to arrive for our Happy Hour reception beginning at 5:30pm on Thursday. Our programming will end in time for you to be at MSP airport comfortably by 5:00pm on Friday, but we encourage you to stay into the weekend to check out the Twin Cities more if your schedule allows.
These visits are primarily for candidates who are strongly considering ranking the University of Minnesota highly but are not familiar with our campus and the Twin Cities. You will have an opportunity to see our three clinical sites, meet some of our current residents and chiefs, and spend some time on campus. This programming is not aimed at candidates who are familiar with UMN, our clinical sites, and the Twin Cities generally.
No. We have enrolled in the early lock option for our rank lists, so those are due to the NRMP prior to our first Second Look date. Our Program Director and Associate Program Directors will not be made aware of who is registered for these days to ensure they do not affect our rank list order. We know there are myriad reasons someone may or may not choose to visit on these dates, and encourage you to consider signing up for them only for the purpose of informing your own choices prior to finalizing your rank list if you feel that an in-person visit would be helpful.
No. Our Program Director and other program leadership will not be available for meetings with candidates during the Second Look visits. Our Chief Residents will be the main hosts for the visit, and you will have ample opportunity to ask them and current residents questions, or you are free to email us at medapply@umn.edu at any time with questions.
You will have to cover most expenses of the trip. We will cover the transportation among our clinical sites and some food during the programming. You will be responsible for your travel, housing, and incidental costs. If you fly here, we encourage you to rely on public transportation rather than renting a car, as parking near campus can get expensive.
Winter in Minnesota has gotten a bit unpredictable. We encourage you to check weather reports shortly before departing. It will most likely be below freezing, and possibly extremely cold. Dressing in layers is recommended, and a windproof outer layer is the best choice. Unless it is actively snowing, you can expect roads and sidewalks to be well plowed. The recommended dress for Thursday evening is casual, and for Friday is business casual. No ties or jackets are required, and comfortable footwear is strongly encouraged.
We will email a sign-up link to all candidates who have interviewed with us following the end of our last interview date in January. We can accept up to 18 participants each date, and a wait list will be first-come-first-served if all spaces fill. Further details for recommended hotels, restaurants, and activities will be emailed to those who register for each date.
If you are not able to sign up, please consider visiting the Twin Cities on your own. You can explore our East Bank campus, Minneapolis, and St. Paul at any time and get a good flavor of the Twin Cities. We have a wide variety of music, sports, art, theater, and other community events happening all the time.
