The University of Minnesota's policy on safety of minors can be found through the University's policy library.
All programs that involve children under age 18 must register through the UMN Program Submission Form. This includes labs that employ or have volunteers that are under age 18.
Training
All personnel working in the lab must complete training prior to the minor starting. The training can be accessed through Training Hub and will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Background Checks
All personnel working in the lab must complete a background check prior to the minor starting. Most background checks take about a week to complete and cost around $26 each, but this can vary depending on the situation. This cost will be charged to the lab.
To complete these background checks, please email cbshr@umn.edu with a list of employees, their employee ID numbers and email addresses, and a non-sponsored EFS chartstring to charge the expenses to.
Please note, background checks that are completed for this purpose are good for three years.
Health and Safety Requirements
All labs that will have minor must follow specific Health and Safety Requirements.
Providing a specific staff to youth ratio depending on the minor's age.
Having at least one staff member receive basic pediatric and adult first aid, CPR and AED training.
Lab staff must avoid being alone with a minor.
Lab staff must be aware of mandatory reporting regulations.
