The University and its affiliate sites take the patients right to privacy as paramount. No one should be accessing the medical record or any patient (including family members) without medical necessity or approved study protocol. Residents and fellows inadvertently violate patient privacy when they access medical records for reasons other than those listed above. It is the expectation that UMN GME trainees will respect the University's policy and procedures with regard to medical record access. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.

Please note when accessing medical records: The electronic medical records at our affiliate sites are equipped with surveillance software that is monitored by members of the compliance team. Certain actions within the EMR are being tracked or recorded for various purposes such as security, compliance, or quality assurance.

UMN HIPAA Training
This is the standard training required to be completed by all UMN learners withing Health Sciences. See the instructions linked in your onboarding/advancing checklists: Instructions: HIPAA Training.
This required training augments the UMN general HIPAA training with specific cases addressing scenarios frequently encountered by residents and fellows.
Current trainees helped to develop this module. It includes topics of when it is appropriate to access patient charts, how hospitals monitor HIPAA violations, and the ramifications of HIPAA violations for individuals and the institution.
