How to Issue Permission Numbers - A guide for instructors to issue permission numbers
Use the Course Calendar to review the following:
in-person courses happening in a given semester
university holidays
other relevant dates from the UMN's academic calendar
course proposal deadlines for graduate courses (dark green)
course proposal deadlines for undergraduate courses (lavender)
The process of getting a new course or course updates approved has multiple steps, which is why following course proposal deadlines is paramount for getting a course approved on time.
Faculty members only need to submit materials for the Departmental Curriculum Committee and the CFANS Curriculum Committee.
Proposals for new courses and updates to existing courses must go through the Department's Curriculum Committee for approval.
Prepare the following:
Course syllabus
Course description
Send the course documents to the Curriculum Chair in order to have them reviewed by the committee.

Once approved, the instructor will work with the Office Specialist (Coursedog contact) to ensure all necessary materials are prepared to submit the proposal to the CFANS Curriculum Committee.
Review the CFANS guide Instructions for Proposing New Undergraduate Courses or Instructions for Updating Undergraduate Courses, depending on your circumstances. The directions for undergraduate and graduate courses are essentially the same.
An accurate syllabus is the cornerstone of a course proposal. In order to ensure your proposal does not have delays, the Office of Undergraduate Education has created the CFANS Syllabus Template, which meets the majority of syllabus requirements. If you choose to develop your own syllabus template or make extreme modifications to the CFANS Syllabus Template, please review the Syllabus Requirements policy.
When you have completed your syllabus, review the CFANS Syllabus Checklist to ensure accessibility and compliance with university policy.
