Science and Engineering Related Minors
ECE students can often "double dip" some of the courses for a science or engineering related minor within their technical program by taking minor coursework from the "Additional Technical Electives" list.
Computer Science Minor: EE students can declare a CSCI Minor and can potentially "double dip" most of the CSCI requirements by taking courses that count in the "additional technical elective" area of the EE technical program. EE students should discuss their plan with the ECE undergraduate advisor to maximize course efficiency. CompE students are not eligible to declare a CSCI Minor. Here is the link to information about the CSCI minor requirements. That same webpage has a link to the Google form that you need to fill out to declare the minor. Note that EE 1301 will count as the beginning programming class for the minor. See the bottom of this webpage for more info about counting EE 1301 for the minor. Also, please be aware that the minor is now more strict on which courses can count for the minor. In particular, CSCI 4061 will not count toward the minor.
Mathematics Minor: Common option for ECE students. Relates well to Digital Signal Processing areas. Some of the minor coursework such as 4000 and 5000 level MATH courses and MATH 3283W can "double dip" as "additional technical electives" in both the EE and CompE degree programs. Here is the current catalog for the Math minor. Send an email to mathadv@umn.edu to declare the minor.
Physics Minor: Common option for ECE students. Relates well to Magnetic, Optics and RF areas. Some of the required minor courses are part of the lower division coursework for EE and CompE students. Some of the upper division PHYS courses for the minor can "double dip" as "additional technical electives" in the EE and CompE degree programs. Here is the current catalog for the Physics minor.
Astrophysics Minor: EE students who took Physics III (instead of Chem II) can complete the Astrophysics Minor by taking AST 2001. AST 2001 can count in the "additional technical electives" area of the EE student's technical program, depending on the previous number of "additional technical elective" credits taken. CompE students are eligible as well although they will need to take additional coursework over and above CompE requirements. Here is the current catalog for the Astrophysics minor. To declare the minor, please email Professor Gehrz at gehrz001@umn.edu.
Other Minors of Interest
Management Minor: Students considering a Management Minor should discuss with ECE undergraduate advisor. Students who matriculated at the U of M between Fall 2020 and Spring 2022 can opt for an EE or CompE degree with a Business and Management Emphasis. Students who began at the U of M prior to Fall 2020 must complete the Management Minor for credits to apply to BEE or BCompE degrees. Students who matriculated at the U of M starting in Fall 2022 and later are not eligible for the Business and Management Emphasis.
Product Design Minor: Students considering a Product Design minor should discuss with ECE undergraduate advisor. Students who matriculated at the U of M between Fall 2020 and Spring 2022 can opt for an EE or CompE degree with a Product Design Emphasis. Students who began at the U of M prior to Fall 2020 must complete the Product Design Minor for credits to apply to BEE or BCompE degrees. Students who matriculated at the U of M starting in Fall 2022 and later are not eligible for the Product Design Emphasis.
Sustainability Minor: Students considering a Sustainability minor should discuss with ECE undergraduate advisor.
