Directed Study Class EE 4893
Students may design an independent research project with a faculty member and register for the EE directed study course. Each project can be between 1 and 3 credits, and students can apply a maximum of 3 credits total of EE directed study to their technical program. Note that a 1 credit directed study project should equate to 3 hours of work per week in the regular fall or spring academic term. Here are the steps to arranging a directed study for credit:
The first step is to find an instructor who is willing to supervise your research and help you develop a project proposal.
Fill out this Directed Study Form.
Write up a detailed project proposal in consultation with your faculty supervisor. Please see here for a Good Example of a 3 credit directed study proposal. Note that the proposal must include the following:
your name
project title
background statement, and
a full description of the project including A) the objectives for the project, B) a statement of work including description of methods and procedures, and C) the anticipated timeline for the project.
Send the written project proposal and the Directed Study Form to Kimberly Scott at scot0052@umn.edu. She will put the information in the department files and forward the proposal to Prof. Leger for approval.
A final written report will be required for all directed study projects at the end of the term.
At the end of the term, Kimberly will send your faculty advisor an evaluation form. The faculty supervisor must send the student's final report and the evaluation form to Kimberly. Prof. Leger will review all of the information before the final grade is entered.

UNITE: Explore long distance learning options for some CSE classes through the UNITE team. Undergraduate students can only take one class through UNITE per semester because our undergraduate degree programs are designed as in-person degrees. There is $100 per credit fee for any class taken via UNITE. Starting in the fall of 2024, the UNITE fee of $100 per credit will be discontinued. Undergraduates are generally expected to enroll in the in-person section unless there is a time conflict or some other compelling reason to take a coures via UNITE.
