The Supporting Program allows you to customize your degree by exploring a related area of interest. You’ll complete at least 12 credits in coursework that either deepen your expertise or broaden your knowledge and skills in other fields. Courses from other disciplines or outside the department are strongly encouraged.
Note: We recommend consulting with your OLPD advisor before choosing Supporting Program courses.
Complete 12 credits from the pre-approved coursework listed on your APAS Report under "Supporting Program."
Pursue a minor or additional non-OLPD major (these could be related to the major or not).
In consultation with your OLPD advisor, you can develop your own Supporting Program based on your major and career aspirations.
Both HRD and BME majors have a list of courses that have been pre-approved to fulfill Supporting Program credits. Refer to your APAS to determine which courses are pre-approved.
Action steps: If you select courses from this list, there's nothing else you need to do. As you register for and complete courses here, you should see them populate in your APAS automatically.
You are permitted to use any minor or another non-OLPD major to satisfy the Supporting Program requirement.
Action steps: If you choose this option, work with your OLPD advisor to ensure that your APAS is updated. (This process will not be automated unless courses happen to be on the pre-approved list.)
You are able to develop your own Supporting Program that aligns with your professional aspirations. Coursework can be taken from any college or department as long as the courses are linked thematically. This option may include OLPD coursework that does not satisfy another requirement in the major.
Action steps: Consult with your OLPD advisor prior to registering for courses.
Supporting Program coursework can be completed at any time. Keep in mind that some courses may require prerequisites, so plan ahead.
If designing your own Supporting Program, you should select courses that are linked thematically. Generally, courses must be upper division (3xxx level or higher).
Consider the following: what are your general goals/interests? When you think about a future career goal, what additional knowledge or skillset would be beneficial?
You’ll need to consult with your OLPD advisor when planning your Supporting Program. Be prepared to provide a short written justification (a couple of sentences per course) or meet with your advisor to discuss possible coursework.
Although there are not restrictions on fulfilling the Supporting Program through a minor, some common minors that our students pursue include: Management, Sport Management, Retail Merchandising, and Communication Studies. HRD majors have the option to pursue the Human Resources and Industrial Relations (HRIR) minor as well.
Yes, there is potential to apply previous coursework to your Supporting Program. Please consult with your OLPD advisor.
