Applied Experience Overview

Real World Experience + OLPD 4696 course = Applied Experience

The Applied Experience is the culminating experience for all Business & Marketing Education and Human Resource Development majors, affording students an opportunity to seek out practical work experience related to their major. 

All students must satisfy 4 credits of the Applied Experience to graduate and most students fulfill their Applied Experience in their final semester. The majority of BME majors and all HRD majors enroll in the course OLPD 4696: Applied Experience in BME and HRD.

Students are encouraged to begin planning for their Applied Experience 2-3 semesters prior to graduation. Although students are responsible for meeting eligibility and securing a position, OLPD advisors are available to help guide students through this process.

Step 1: Ensure you've met course prerequisites.

Step 2: Secure a professional experience (job, internship, volunteer opportunity) involving activities related to BME or HRD.

Step 3: Complete the Applied Experience Proposal Form to receive permission to register for OLPD 4696.

Applied Experience Prerequisites

Enrollment in OLPD 4696: Applied Experience for BME and HRD requires completion of course prerequisites. For both majors, students are required to complete OLPD 3609: Profession and Practice AND 3 out of 4 core classes for their major. Prerequisite courses are generally offered in the fall and spring semesters, with occasional May and summer term options for some courses.

HRD certificate students

Students pursuing only the HRD certificate have different prerequisites: OLPD 3601, OLPD 3621, and OLPD 3641.  HRD certificate students do not take OLPD 3609 or OLPD 3202.

OLPD 4696: Applied Experience Registration

Registration in OLPD 4696 is by permission only. Once you have secured a role for your Applied Experience, please complete the Applied Experience Proposal Form for your major. Students should aim to secure a position and submit the proposal form one semester prior to when they hope to enroll in OLPD 4696. 

Determining Credits

Students can register for 1-4 credits each semester. The number of credit hours is determined by the number or working hours that a student expects to accrue over the duration of the semester (1 credit = 40 hours, 4 credits = 160 hours). While the majority of students satisfy their Applied Experience requirement in one semester, students also have the option to complete credits for their Applied Experience across multiple semesters. 

Applied Experience Proposal Form

Once prerequisites have been met and you've secured an eligible role, request permission to register for the OLPD 4696 Applied Experience course using the applicable proposal form linked below. 


This form takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete and will require you to input details including the Applied Experience site and supervisor information, as well as information on expected responsibilities. At the time of submission, you are also required to submit a document of proof that they have secured a position (offer letter, letter from supervisor, etc.)

OLPD 4696: Applied Experience Course Information

Students must be actively engaged in their work experience while concurrently registered for OLPD 4696 for their position to count. Positions and hours cannot be applied retroactively. (For example, a student cannot be engaged with their work experience during a summer and then register for the OLPD 4696 course in fall.) 

OLPD 4696 is an online-only course delivered through Canvas. Although there are no set meeting times, students enrolled in OLPD 4696 will be required to complete course readings and assignments with set due dates throughout the semester. 

Alternate Pathways for Satisfying the Applied Experience

Although the majority of students satisfy their Applied Experience requirement by registering for OLPD 4696, there are alternate options available. 

Students may combine options to earn the 4 credits needed for the Applied Experience.


Applied Experience Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a position that I can use for my Applied Experience?

Students are responsible for securing their own role. We highly recommend utilizing Career Services, Handshake, advisors, instructors, and tapping into friends and family networks. Not sure where to get started? Connect with your OLPD advisor.

What types of work experiences can I use for my Applied Experience?

Students can utilize jobs, internships, and even volunteer experiences, as long as the position involves activities related to the major. When looking for a work experience, consider what major courses you've found most interesting, and what aspects of business would help you explore career opportunities and interests. 

I just tried to register for the OLPD 4696 course but got a registration error. What do I do?

Registration for OLPD 4696 is through permission number only. After securing a position, submit the BME Applied Experience Proposal Form or HRD Applied Experience Proposal Form. This form takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete and requires you to input your Applied Experience site and supervisor information, as well as information regarding your expected responsibilities. You are also required to submit a document of proof that you have secured a position (offer letter, letter from supervisor, etc.). 

How many hours do I need to work?

Each credit equals 40 hours of work. To register for 4 credits of OLPD 4696, you'll need to accrue 160 hours over the course of the semester. 

Can I count a previous position for my Applied Experience?

No. Retroactive work experiences are not permitted. Students must be registered for OLPD 4696 the same semester that they're engaged at their workplace. 

Can I use my current job for my Applied Experience?

Current places of employment have the potential to be used for the Applied Experience as long as it involves new projects or activities. Please consult with your OLPD advisor if you have a current role you'd like to explore using. 

When do I need to submit my proposal form?

Plan to submit your BME Applied Experience Proposal form  or HRD Applied Experience Proposal Form the semester prior to when you intend to complete your Applied Experience. Proposal forms are reviewed during registration season and permission numbers are issued starting the second week of registration. Permission to register is dependent on a variety of factors, including when the proposal form was submitted and enrollment capacity in OLPD 4696. Permission to register after the semester has started is not guaranteed. 

What if my internship doesn't start until a couple weeks after the semester begins?

We recognize that many positions may not align perfectly with the dates of an academic term. Generally speaking, this is okay, as long as you will begin work within the first few weeks of the term, your work will last at least 6 weeks, and you will accrue the required work hours per credit registered. Please consult with your OLPD advisor if you’re concerned about this. 

Note: Students are expected to engage with the OLPD 4696 coursework over the duration of the academic term registered, regardless of the actual dates of employment.



I plan to use credits from study abroad or National Student Exchange. What should I do?

Contact your OLPD advisor if you intend to apply credits from study abroad or National Student Exchange. 

I'm a BME major pursuing the HRD certificate. How many credits do I need to satisfy the Applied Experience?

A total of 6 credits is required. While enrolled in OLPD 4696, it's expected that the activities and projects are connected to either HRD or BME during that time.
