If it is so flawed, why is it being used?
(AI Generated)
This statement made by @AdrianRistic on X is an example of the type of claim that people who support the use of AI generated art. The common reason so many people are open to using and justify using AI to generate is fairly simple. They view AI as a tool to express themselves rather than a seperate entity.
(AI Generated - "Painting Edmond de Belamy")
(Epstein et al, 2020)
The above chart shows the perspectives the roles of countributions (on a scale from 0 to 7) of those involved in the AI generation of a piece titled "Painting Edmond de Belamy" on the countribution of AI to the work. "Agent" being that the AI did the work while "Tool" being that the AI was a tool on the process. The AI generated work "Painting Edmond de Belamy" was the first AI piece to be sold in auction, generated by the GAN AI system and sold for $432,500 at Christie's Art Auction. The term crowd reffers to the buyers and observers at the auction. The title technologist refferres to the person who trained the AI. Aritist reffers to the eproson who prompted the AI to create the piece. Curator reffers to the one who ran the aution at Christie's Art Auction. Finally ELIZA refferes to an AI chat bot to get an AI "perspective". (Epstein et al, 2020).
To get art, you need an artist. Many artists like to make art for personal purpases, and in current times, will post their work on the internet. If an individual or buisness were to like an artists style enough, they may commission an artist so that the artist will create work in accordance with their request. Depending on the details of the requested work and the artist, the price of the commission may increase. Individuals and companies that commission arists are not just paying for the artwork. They are paying for the artists time, effort and materials they dedicate to create the custom work.
AI companies have the tendancy to only charge a subscription price, making it significantly cheaper than paying an artist. When said individuals and companies are given the opportunity to save money and receive their desired art they are bound to take it.
"Time is Money."
Creating artwork takes time. When an Individual or company wants to commission an artwork, they are provided a timeline from the artist of how long it will take for the art work to be completed. Depending on the artist and medium of art, it can take from a few days to a few months for a custom work to be completed. If the work does not fulfill the expectations of the commissioner at any point in the process, it can add aditional time to the process for the artist to correct it.
AI is capable of generating work within seconds after being given a prompt. For many companies, time is money, and the longer a company waits for a piece the more they may have to pay the artist and the longer they have to wait to lay out any advertisement or product that required the art work.
“AI really helps get rid of some of the more tedious or busy work steps of the art making process,”
(Junior art therapy major Olivia Glusic, 2023)
To be frank, generating AI requires no learned skill. The first step to generating AI art is to download one of the many apps or go to one of the many sites that generate images. After that, whoever wants to generate a work just needs to type in a prompt and buzzwords and the AI will fulfill your request using its pattern data. If you want something new? Ask the AI to generate a new one with immediate results.
