I was fortunate to couples match with my wife (rheumatology) to fellowship at UofM and will be forever grateful. While I knew the faculty here were all leaders in their field, I’m also in awe every day of my co-fellows, their accomplishments, and how kind and selfless everyone is. The structure of the program is also very flexible allowing you to tailor the 2nd and 3rd years towards your endeavors. There are endless research opportunities, and even multidisciplinary projects with other schools such as pharmacy or engineering - you have access to it all! We also have the privilege to work at our Veterans Hospital, one of the top in the country. Ann Arbor itself is also one of the best places to raise a family, and the program is very family-friendly as well.

I was thrilled to match into the heme/onc fellowship program at University if Michigan. The program curriculum is very flexible which allows you to blaze your own academic trail, whether it be more clinical or research focused. U of M also provides ample resources in the form of nationally renouned faculty mentors, vast research infrastructure, and a collaborative atmosphere which are vital to building the foundation of your career. Ann Arbor is a great town which is more manageable than a big city while still having a lot to offer. However, its proximity to Detroit and the surrounding suburbs also provided numerous attractive employment opportunities for my spouse, who is also in medicine.

I was impressed with the Michigan Medicine hematology and oncology program’s welcoming and friendly atmosphere on my interview day, and from then on knew it was the right program for me. I am so grateful to be doing my fellowship here. The faculty are very supportive and always eager to teach, and I have found very supportive mentors who are helping me grow to be the oncologist I’ve always dreamed of becoming. There are ample and diverse research opportunities and support for learning new skills along the way. Most importantly, I’m lucky to be surrounded by the most amazing co-fellows who are an integral part of my training experience at Michigan Medicine.
Small City, Big Intellect
While we’re proud of the scale and the stature of our programs, numbers can’t capture the warmth and collegiality of our culture and our institution. The University of Michigan is a place where physicians bump into engineers at a coffee shop and form decades-long research partnerships. It is a place where continuous learning is a given. Lectures by visiting international experts are just one of the ways our students discover a richer learning experience. In short, the world comes to you at the University of Michigan. We combine opportunities to learn from world-class leaders with a setting that thrives on collaboration.
Stronger Together
You’ll join a cohort of students, residents and fellows from leading institutions.
Our programs frequently recruit trainees from top 20 medical schools, and when trainees leave Michigan, they have their pick of options.
With 26 residency and 80 fellowship programs, the learning experience at Michigan provides rich opportunities to learn with and from a large cohort. We are committed to an environment that recognizes strengths in different backgrounds, skills and abilities.
Great cases come to you
Your training ground is Michigan Medicine, U-M's academic medical center, which includes in-patient hospitals for adults and children, and specialty centers for cardiovascular care, cancer treatment, eye care, and women’s health.
The size and scope of clinical facilities — nearly 1,000 beds and U-M’s status as a state referral center mean that you’ll manage more clinical cases and see more diverse and rare cases than at other institutions. And with the hospital campus in the center of our compact and livable city, you’ll spend more time seeing patients and less time stuck in traffic
