Michigan Medicine highly prioritizes wellness for our house officers. This initiative is led by the Office of Counseling and Workplace Resilience. Through this office, professional counseling, crisis services, and wellness information are provided completely confidential and free of charge
The Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at UM supports your wellness and is continually improving based on fellows' feedback. See below for some of our initiatives and efforts.
To reduce non-educational workload over the weekend for 1st year fellows based on prior feedback, we have upper year fellows cover outpatient calls from 8AM-3PM on Saturdays and Sundays.
Monthly meetings to update all fellows on potential changes and discuss feedback about faculty interactions, rotations, etc. Led by Michelle and Dr. Worden.
Special morning conferences aimed at special interest topics such as physician burnout, dealing with medical errors (collaboration with UM Risk Management), medical cannabis use (collaboration with Dr. Evan Litnas)
In case of unexpected events such as fatigue or illness, we automatically have a backup coverage system for fellows on inpatient rotations. This requires no explanation or "payback" time, and is fully handled by Michelle.
Michigan Medicine recognizes that House Officers use their personal devices to perform work on a daily basis. To that end, the House Officers Association negotiated a $50 monthly stipend for House Officers in order to offset the cost of maintaining their personal devices
End-of-the-year retreat for fellows only, customized yearly to address fellows' needs. Recent retreat focused on non-academic careers and wellness, with speakers from industry, community practice and hospital administration
The House Officer Mental Health Program is a dedicated clinic established in 1996 that focuses on house officer mental health issues. Visits are flexible, free (no insurance billing), and confidential (not documented in MiChart).
Due to the recent efforts by the House Officers Association, fellows are eligible for 6-8 weeks of maternity leave (6 weeks for vaginal delivery, 8 weeks for C-section). Fellows also are eligible for up to 6 weeks of paternity leave, an increase from 2 weeks previously. Time away may result in an extension of training. Considerations for the ABIM Deficit in Training will be applied on a case by case basis.
Monthly sessions led by an upper year fellow -currently Stephanie Hoffman- aimed to provide a space for first year fellows to process their experiences together and explore content with the goal of building tools that can be used on a day-to-day basis. Content draws from the ASCO Resilience Skills Training Program as well as coursework in positive psychology from University of Pennsylvania.
