Leah Wells, MD - Class of 2025 (University of Wisconsin)
At the University of Michigan, each fellow learns from devoted teachers and clinical experts across the field of hematology-oncology. Mentorship is also highly valued and fostered by the program. Throughout fellowship, my mentorship team, led by Dr. Angel Qin, helped me to expand my clinical knowledge and gain research experience in my area of interest, thoracic oncology. I also became lifelong friends with my co-fellows and colleagues. As we graduate and start our careers, I am grateful to the University of Michigan for preparing me and my co-fellows for our next steps, and for all the fun we had along the way!
Samuel Reynolds, MD - Class of 2024 (Moffitt)
From my first point of contact with The University of Michigan Heme/Onc fellowship program during interviews, I knew that this institution was different. The faculty, coordinators and certainly co-fellows don't see you purely as a physician in training or potential contributor to research projects but rather as a unique individual with your own set of interests and goals. Our program leadership, from day one, was intent on getting to know me, my family and wanted to know how they could best support us in achieving our long-terms goals. Within the first few months of training, our faculty helped guide my co-fellows and I through a very steep learning curve and become integrated in the fabric of the University of Michigan, always emphasizing the importance of providing our patients with the Michigan difference. As first year came to a close, I was very pleased to work with Drs. Asra Ahmed and Qing Li on projects pertaining to various RASopathies, including histiocytic neoplasms and in myelofibrosis. The research mentorship I gained through those experiences laid the foundation for an ongoing career in research and allowed my to develop relationships with not only other Michigan faculty but collaborators at other institutions. Today, now one year into my position at Moffitt, I still think back to all of the teaching and research experiences I garnered during fellowship. I would not be where I am today without Michigan and would go back and do it all again.
Nicole Grogan Fleege - Class of 2022 (University of Iowa)
When I interviewed for Hematology/Oncology fellowship, I was looking for a needle in a haystack - a program where I would be challenged academically, encouraged to grow in my research knowledge and experience, but also enjoy time spent with my colleagues. Michigan provided me with all of these things and more. Through the broad range of clinical rotations we experience during the first year of fellowship, I found my passion for breast oncology. I was then able to form a mentoring team, led by Dr. Lynn Henry, and spent the final two years of fellowship growing my knowledge about symptom management research. Due to the excellent mentoring I received at the University of Michigan, I was selected to receive a career development award from ASCO, which has supported my clinical research beyond fellowship and into my first faculty job as a breast oncologist at the University of Iowa. Even more valuable than these academic experiences, however, was the bond I developed with my co-fellows. I cherish these friendships that will last a lifetime.
If I had to do it again, I can say without a doubt that I would choose the University of Michigan. I hope you will consider us!
Monica Arun Patel - Class of 2020 (University of Wisconsin)
Looking back at fellowship, I can truly say that my experience at the University of Michigan was exceptional. The fellowship is well-founded in terms of clinical care in both Hematology and Medical Oncology. In addition, there are diverse research opportunities in basic, clinical and health services research. The mentorship I received from my clinical and research mentors prepared me incredibly well for my career as an academic medical oncologist. In addition, the relationship I developed with my co-fellows in immeasurable. The University of Michigan fellowship program was absolutely the right choice for me and reflecting back, I have no regrets.
John Reneau, MD, PhD - Class of 2019 (The Ohio State University)
I graduated from the hematology and oncology fellowship at the University of Michigan in 2019. After graduation, I joined the faculty of The Ohio State University as an assistant professor in the division of hematology. My current clinical and research interests focus on the development of novel treatments for lymphomas.
When looking for a fellowship program, I wanted to ensure that I had access to engaged and knowledgeable faculty who would be able to guide me through such a complex field. Additionally, I knew that having access to world class mentors and researchers was important in such a rapidly developing field. I can say without hesitation that the training program at the University of Michigan exceeded my expectations and prepared me well for a career in hematology. Besides the excellent training, I can say that one of the greatest assets of the fellowship program is its leadership. Dr. Worden and Michelle are an excellent team who truly look out for the fellows and their interests. Having grown up in Texas, I was unsure how I would settle into Midwest life, but I truly loved living in Ann Arbor for fellowship. My wife and I had two young children during our time there and found Ann Arbor to be an inviting place full of activities for us as a family. I hope that you strongly consider Michigan for your fellowship - without a doubt, it is one of the best places to train in the country!
