Academic Recommendation
Letters of recommendation must be less than 12 months old.
The academic letter of recommendation must be completed by instructors who teach content courses in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, or the professions, and may NOT be completed by a language instructor.
Current U-M students must get least one letter from a U-M instructor (faculty or GSI).
JD students applying for Academic Year fellowships, including those in dual degree programs, must have at least one letter from a U-M Law School faculty member in order to be considered for Law School tuition cost sharing.
The same person may NOT complete both the academic recommendation and the Language Instructor Recommendation, even if this person is qualified to do both.
If you are applying for both the Academic Year AND Summer FLAS Fellowships, you may use the same recommender for one or both academic recommendations.
FOR INCOMING GRADUATE STUDENT APPLICANTS ONLY: Incoming students may use letters of recommendation submitted with their admission application (or obtain letters of recommendation specifically for the FLAS Fellowship Application), but the RECOMMENDATIONS MUST BE REQUESTED THROUGH THE APPLICATION PORTAL. FLAS Admins will no longer pull any information from graduate applications.
