Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships provide tuition and stipend to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. The priority is to encourage the study of less commonly taught modern languages. FLAS Fellowships are administered by the University of Michigan International Institute and its area studies centers and are awarded competitively through annual fellowship competitions.

These fellowships are funded with grants from the US Department of Education (US/ED) under Title VI of the Higher Education Act (grant numbers P015B180105, P015B180106, P015B180107, P015B180108, P015B180110, and P015B180114) and supplemented with university funds when required by grant guidelines. The number of each type of fellowship to be awarded by each Center and the amount of each fellowship are contingent upon annual US/ED program budget approval, federal regulations, as well as annual Congressional budget appropriations, all of which may change from year to year. Applicants should be aware that until final confirmation is received from US/ED, fellowship awards and amounts are contingent and may change at a later date.

There are three different types of FLAS Fellowships: Graduate Academic Year FLAS, Undergraduate Academic Year FLAS, and Summer FLAS. Each type of award has slightly different sets of rules and application procedures. You may apply for both a Summer FLAS and Academic Year FLAS.
