Our group tackled air pollution and its effects on the health of the residents of Detroit. Detroit, a city home to over 600,000 residents, saw its industrial boom in the 19th century. Ever since, it has been home to several manufacturers and factories. In recent decades, there have been calls to curb the air pollution generated. There have also been comments on how this is environmental racism, with the toxic gases emitted disproportionately harming the health of communities of color and minority populations. This has led to the creation of several nonprofits that are fighting for environmental justice on behalf of the people of Detroit.
Detroit's motto has always been "Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus," or "We hope for better things; it shall arise from the ashes. Through educating the public and advocating for change, the people of Detroit can reclaim their city from the big polluters and hopefully one-day breathe clean air again.
