Inpatient – The PRM inpatient services has an average census of 4 beds. We also host a robust consult service with an average weekly census of 8. Typical diagnoses include TBI, SCI, medically complex diagnoses, cerebral palsy, neuro-onc and more. Fellows are expected to not only help with direct patient care but also provide teaching and support for rotating residents and medical students.
General PRM – Fellows will spend time with each of our faculty in their general rehabilitation clinics. This will include outpatient management of our more common diagnoses: cerebral palsy, developmental delay, toe walking, concussion, traumatic injuries, and more. Clinic based procedures such as baclofen pump programming and refills, botulinum toxin injections, trigger point injections are also common.
Multidisciplinary Clinics – Fellows will rotate through the robust multidisciplinary clinics that we offer including spina bifida, SMA, DMD, neuromuscular diseases, chronic pain management, OI, vent clinic, brachial plexus injury, limb deficiency (hosted by Mary Free Bed), BRAIN clinic (for post PICU follow up care), and STIR (surgical tone intervention and rehabiltiation clinic).
PRM subspecialty – This rotation is designed to broaden your understanding in the depth of our field through experiences with the CP, spina bifida, and neuromuscular transition clinics. Additionally, time will be spent with orthotics and prosthetics, wheelchair/seating equipment evaluations, and our school clinics.
Procedures – Procedural experiences are woven in through the above rotations and include baclofen pump trials, botulinum toxin injections utilizing e-stim and ultrasound guidance, phenol neurolysis, and intra-operative monitoring for selective dorsal rhizotomies. EMG experience is available with our neurology colleagues who welcome the interested PRM fellow.
Pediatrics (general and specialty) – Each fellow completes 2 weeks of general pediatrics for an exposure to typical development. Pediatric subspecialty rotations include time with neurology, orthopedic surgery, developmental behavioral pediatrics, sleep medicine, palliative care, rheumatology, special needs gynecology, genetics, and sports medicine. Continuity Clinic –This clinic occurs for ½ day every Wednesday and is an opportunity for fellows to provide true continuity of care to patients throughout the 2 year fellowship. In addition to post IPR discharge follows up fellows also will see a wide variety of Peds PMR diagnoses including developmental assessments, gait abnormalities, CP management, botulinum toxin injections, and more.
Rural Medicine Experience -- This rotation offers experience in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in Marquette, MI. This experience enhances the fellow's training in the care of rural/underserve populations and care for patients affiliated with local indigenous tribes.
Research – The research rotation can be designed in a variety of ways to meet fellow needs. Depending on the project fellows could choose to take a 1, 2 or 4 weeks of research time as a block or use ½ day or 1 full day of research for several weeks on outpatient and elective months.

The Pediatric Rehabilitation Center (PRC) at Michigan Medicine offers physical and occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, rehabilitation psychology, and neuropsychology, as well as physician offices and clinics for Pediatric Rehabilitation. PRC also offers a gym, equipped with a rock climbing wall, cage therapy, FES bike, and much more!
The Brighton Center for Specialty Care (BCSC) offers physical and occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and physician clinics for Pediatric Rehabilitation. Highlights of BCSC include the Zero G machine (pictured to the right)!
Pediatric Rehabilitation at Briarwood is home to a number of comprehensive programs that support our Pediatric Rehabilitation patients, including Comprehensive Hand and Arm Movement Program (CHAMP), STEPS Autism Treatment Program, and a Lokomat!
The Northville Health Center (NHC) offers physician clinics for Pediatric Rehabilitation and includes a dedicated suite for musculoskeletal services, including exam rooms, cast tables, a hydro room, private treatment rooms, and a large therapy area with exercise equipment and locker rooms.
