For this project, I created an anticipatory reading guide for a Newsela article. This reading guide featured essential questions tied to several standards. This guide was important for several reasons. Firstly, the "before reading" aspect allowed me to gauge students' current understandings and possible miscomprehensions. These could be used to shape future instruction. Likewise, the "after reading" section allowed me to see students' learning, especially in regard to their comprehension of the article. An image of the first half of the guide is provided on the left. To see the whole document please email me at kengels99@gmail.com.
This lesson plan was focused on increasing student literacy of scientific reports. Often time, literacy is wrongly left to ELA course while in reality there is content-specific literature for each content area. The goal of this lesson plan was to scaffold students through understanding a scientific paper from a distinguished journal. In creating this lesson plan, I learned to effectively utilize several graphic organizers designed to scaffold students in their understanding of the paper's content. This is important as being able to understand science literature is a life skill for students, regardless of their future career choices. Likewise, this is also important because I can implement the same tools in my own future classroom. Unfortunately, due to limitations with Google Sites I am unable to upload the Microsoft Word document for viewing without significant formatting issues. However, If you email me (kengels99@gmail.com) I would be happy to provide you with the file.
