As stated in my philosophy, the creation of a safe and welcoming student-centered classroom is key to effective learning. Such a classroom is composed of two main elements: culture and physical. Class culture needs to promote mutual respect and responsibility between students (peer to peer) and the educator (student to teacher). To build this rapport, students need to be involved in the creation of the class rules, routines, and consequences. When all parties have representation, it is easy to promote respect and equal responsibility. Correspondingly, the physical set up of the classroom is important as well. Posters, plants, and other decorations can go a long way to make a classroom feel safe. Likewise, furniture set up, such as having students in small groups or pairs, can aid in creating a welcoming student-centered environment. Overall, the combination of the cultural and physical aspects can make or break the image of a safe and welcoming student-centered classroom.
