In several formats, the Barger Leadership Institute and the Education Program student teaching, I have developed curriculum to contribute towards the audience's learning. Curriculum is not only important for teaching and learning, but it is also an important skill to practice in creating, packaging and thoughtfully presenting information designed specifically for the intended audience.
1) Peer Facilitator Training Curriculum
Given my strengths in curriculum development, background in education, and awareness of the organizational foundations of the Barger Leadership Institute, I was invited to develop a consistent curriculum for the training for the Peer Facilitators, which is six weeks long at the beginning of every semester.
This included developing an Overview and Objectives for the Training and the Weekly Training Minutes. The Minutes linked was the original curriculum that was implemented in the Fall 2019 semester. After reflection and some modifications, the Winter 2019 curriculum had mindfulness-related activities for the Peer Facilitators to think of their identities and how it impacts their roles as facilitators and mentors.
2) Student Teaching Cold War Unit Plan
At the conclusion of my student teaching at an Ann Arbor public school, I led a Cold War Unit in a U.S. History and Geography class at the high school level (which consisted of sophomores, juniors and seniors). In order to instruct this unit, I thoroughly researched and developed a three to four-week unit.
To synthesize the students' learning at the conclusion of the unit, I created a Choices Project, where students could create a propaganda poster, a political cartoon, or a Twitter conversation and choose any topic that we had covered in the unit. I have received very positive feedback on the fact that students could choose their project: both on the format and the topic.
