I have been in the Barger Leadership Institute (BLI) since my second year in college. The organization follows a collected focus on the "Leadership is Learned" concept and that leadership requires a hands-on experiential learning. This is practiced through its ten Habits. My favorite Habit is Expect Challenges (pictured on the right) because it is important to practice expecting challenges and upcoming obstacles, even preparing a Plan B, C, etc. in case something unexpected was to happen.
The experiential leadership learning is first introduced in the BLI's Leadership Lab, a course facilitated by BLI Fellows known as Peer Facilitators, a position I held for two years.
Working in the Leadership Lab has led to me finding my passion of empowering people in their work and helping them with their aspirations.
I have had the amazing opportunity to see the growth of approximately ten different student projects as they grew not just in The Leadership Lab but also to the greater University of Michigan campus. The projects are quite diverse as you can see below with the links of the The Dot Org, which is working towards de-stigmatizing menstruation and providing feminine hygiene to those in need, and the Migrant Education Initiative, focusing on bringing more migrant students to the University of Michigan.
Two projects that I have mentored evolved to become Capstone Experience projects, also through the Barger Leadership Institute, where the student team works on their project in-depth for a year long program with $10,000 funding. These projects are The Dot Org and the Migrant Education Initiative.
