My name is Jessica Selzer and I am recent graduate from the University of Michigan. I have a Bachelor's of Art degree with a focus in Secondary Education in History and Psychology. I am also working towards my Master's in Management through the University of Maryland Global Campus.
I am a proud career-changer! My time at the Barger Leadership at the University of Michigan opened my eyes to what I am truly passionate about: helping people, communities and organizations towards positive change.
From my professional and academic work combined with my time at Michigan, I show dedicated commitment and growth over time in both my studies and extra-curriculars. My Master's degree has allowed me to explore various aspects of business, while challenging me to think critically and strategically in group projects, papers, and case analyses.
From my various education and professional experiences, here are my strong skills that I can contribute to your organization:
Management experience
Teamwork & Collaboration
Problem-solving
Collecting & Analyzing Information
Presenting Information (Reports, Presentations)
Breaking down complex information into more understandable content for audiences
Organization & Time Management
Strategic thinking
Similar to why I chose History as a topic to pursue in college, I feel that history is like a story that never ends. The more you learn, the better you can understand about people and events in a particular time period. With learning through reading, I can learn more about myself and about engaging with others. I consider myself a life-long learner, as learning is a pursuit that should never stop. At the moment, I am utilizing Coursera to further my knowledge in analytics with the Google professional certificate in Data Analytics.
I volunteer because I love making a difference in the community and empowering people in any way I can. I have had many opportunities to do volunteering, not only with the Barger Leadership Institute to work at an urban farm in Detroit (pictures below), but I have also worked with Girls on the Run and the MLK Day Children & Youth Program.
Girls on the Run (GOTR) focuses on building confidence and self-esteem in young girls in critical development years, from third grade to middle school years. Through my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, we volunteered often with the organization by helping out at registration events or with the annual 5K event, and hosting Moonball, our annual volleyball tournament event, to raise proceeds for GOTR. For Moonball, I was involved on the Business Committee in asking local companies for donations to auction off at the event.
The MLK Day Children & Youth Program has been a part of my entire University of Michigan experience. I started freshman year, simply as a General Volunteer, helping with the annual event in a variety of tasks including working with the participants of the event as well as helping with logistics to make sure that the event ran smoothly. I then became a part of the Planning Committee for the rest of my undergraduate career as the General Volunteer Recruiting Chair in recruiting, training, and managing volunteers each year for the event.
This was something I found during my time in the Mindful Leader Program at the Barger Leadership Institute. I enjoy writing poetry, which I see as the equivalent to journaling, but in another format. Poetry is a way for me to continue practicing mindfulness in being conscious of my own thoughts and what I see around me.
