Questions that have been asked
Do most of the attendings round on the inpatient services or are there a few attendings that the fellows work with frequently on inpatient?
Within the Cardiology Division, there are a subset of cardiology faculty members that rotate on the University CCU, the University consult service, and the VA consult service. These faculty members are selected due to their exceptional teaching and clinical skills. Each year, faculty are given feedback on their performance on the behalf of the fellows and the list of available faculty is tailored to those with outstanding records and interest in teaching/working with fellows.
Hi. Any moonlighting opportunities for fellows?
Moonlighting is possible during fellowship. Many fellows moonlight at the Ann Arbor VA in the ICU, general medicine wards, and the ED. There are also opportunities at local community hospitals in ICU and general medicine capacities.
Tell us about your experience with clinical research so far
There are a tremendous amount of research opportunities at the University of Michigan. No matter what your interest or prior experience is with research there are mentors and funding mechanisms available. To start, for those interested in a career in research, we have a fully funded T32 grant that covers both basic and clinical research as well as strong early career attending support to help you obtain a future K and R grant. This program would allow you to complete a masters, if interested, and two years of research funding. If you are not locked into this career path, there are more casual opportunities to excel in QI, basic science, or clinical research. You can easily find mentors across the hospital system and broader University that, in my experience, are excited and motivated to mentor. As Drs. Pinsky and Eagle will demonstrate on your interview day, the University has connections to all sorts of databases and resources to help you thrive as you start your research career. If you do publish/present your research, there is ample funding to attend conferences throughout the year. This includes a fully funded trip for the entire first- and third-year fellowship classes to attend ACC each year.
